can someone tell mewhy my daughters car 1976 4speed manual gearbox,without even the engine running she cant get it to stay in 2nd 4th or reverse withought it jumping out of gear.when engine is running it will only stay in 1st gear.but wont stay in other gears as explained.thanks

I have never heard of a gearbox jumping out of gear without the engine running lol.But if its engaged in a gear while your driving down the road and it jumps out of gear then I would say that it sounds like the syncromesh is worn in the gearbox.

or easiest / cheapest fix is find some speedway mini stock guys and try to get a gearbox off one of them for $50, then spend no more than an hour or 2 fitting the thing.

i changed the box on my 76 corolla in my driveway and only had the front on ramps. bit heavy for one guy but very doable
