Hi guys I have just replaced the engine in my range rover with a land rover engine and have just found out that the LR engine is about 50 HP less , I was wondering if anyone knew how they reduce it, im thinking either carb or inlet manifold , I think the compression is the same , apparently they reduced it to make the RR sell more . any ideas . thanks

Range rover - 81 Land Rover defender - 83 Sorry

A quick wiki suggests, presuming both are V8s, that the defender used a low CR 3.5 V8 at about 113 bhp, compared to the 135 bhp of the RR. Not quite 50 bhp, but seems quite a lot of power to lose just from a drop in CR to me.

CR stamped on the block next to dip-stick

Land Rover stage 1 and early one ten were 8.35:1 compression, They had restrictor plates in the manifold to reduce the horsepower, reason being rover felt the V8 was too fast with a vehicle(stage1) that still had drums all round

Both engines have 8.31:1 ratio , mram can these be removed or do I need to get my manifold from the RR engine back .

also is the restrictor plate just in the inlet manifold or both . cheers

Unbolt both carbs and you will see them just pull them out

I did RR heads and stage one cam on my 3.8 V8 Disco and hops along so much better.Bucket loads of fun for towing the V8 off roader on the trailer.
