68 Mk2 Cortina 2l and 5 speed conversion

boom123, Jun 17, 7:11am
Have mk2 Cortina and am looking at putting a 2l and 5speed in it, have all ready put a 1600OHC engine in it and 4speed mk4 Cortina 1600 box in. So the sump, oil pick up, and exhaust has already been set up, so the 2l will drop right in. Also have sierra 5 speed gear box but want to know how to set up the clutch for it as the car still has the hydraulic clutch set up as the 1600 gearbox and mk2 bell housings bolt up, the 5 speed has different bolt pattern for bell housing to the 4 speed so the mk2 bell housing will not bolt up to the 5 speed. Is there away I can set the 5 speed up with the hydraulic clutch or will i have to change to cable! also would like to know any otherbits of advice for this conversion thanks.

why bother replying when you are clearly incapable of helping the guy out!

Im not sure if I have read your post correctly, but I recall hearing of some people getting a flange or something made up to get gearboxes to mate up to things they usually wouldn't - that may be worth looking into!

The advice to google is one of the more helpful options in this case, there will be literally dozens of forums where the same swap has been discussed and good advice given. Often there are simple solutions that only require the knowledge that may come from someone in the UK.
By all means google.

we did a similar conversion to a mk2 about 25 years ago. we used the mk3 2 litre GT OHC motor and mk3 four speed. we adapted the clutch pedal to pull the MK3 cable.i cant remember if we used the mk3 pedal or welded part onto the mk2 pedal.

I must ask why! the car is 44 years old, is it worth the effort for street use! or is it a show car or race car

man some people just dont get it.Because its cool thats why.Not everyone wants to drive a modern boring transport appliance.

Hi OP, reading through this I would definitely go for a cable operation. As pointed out, heaps of people have done similar things over the years, and it's quite possible there is just the info you need sitting on a blog.
Myself, I would remove the pedal from the mk2 and measure it up. You will need the same shape pedal with a cable clevis or similar fitting at the same distance above the fulcrum as your hydraulic pin is now below it. (To keep leg effort about the same) So a good look around the wreckers may produce exactly what you need. If it doesn't, then have a go at welding in the top of the Sierra pedal to the one off the mk2. Finally, cut out the bulkhead around the new exit position for the oputer cable and weld in the donor cars' strengthening metal as perpendicular as you can, to reduce stress on the inside of the outer cable.

I "got it" about 30 years and 6 car builds agofor your information so I will wait for the OP to reply.

Car will be daily driver but want it to have a bit more grunt and the 5th gear for economy, it is one of the cheapest and easier conversions for the mk2 cortina
