Ive owned 3 jappas, a corolla, camry and an integra and they were the most horrible, urelaible pieces of shit that I have ever driven, needless to say I stick to euros

dont know what planet you came from but it was the 1st decent car Holden put out prob cose of the nissan motor
it has very few extras but pretty good as i have one 320k kms rb30 and it prob still be going after my 2000 car has done its time
i had many earlier ones and what a mistake they were

Agreed, the VL was what pulled Holden back from the brink, Holden as we know it may not exist today if the VL hadn't been a success. OK the build quality wasn't wonderful but the Nissan drivetrain transformed it. Its a shame that Nissan wouldn't let Holden develop and manufacture and enlarge it to a decent size as was talked about at the time (RB35 or 38DE anyone!), it would have easily outpowered and outtorqued the Buick V6 rattlebox that got used in the finish. And done so without vibrating the whole car either!

phillip.weston, Jul 28, 9:57am
it would have been too expensive for Holden to continue purchasing engines from Nissan due to the strengthening yen at the time. The Buick V6 was far cheaper to source for the VN. Holden could have even used the 3L DOHC 24V inline 6 from the Opel Omega the Commodore was based on, but probably too expensive and complex.

Exactly, importing the RB30 as it was cost a truckload at the time. But was necessary for survival. If local production had been allowed it would have done much longer service in the Commodore. But hey off topic.

Holden Barina.A German car (Opel) made in Spain, with an Australian badge! Bought brand new and nothing but trouble.Sold it at 35 Ks. Lots of little faults needing repair or replacement including engine,gearbox,steering,aircon-
,etc,etc
USELESS! service under warranty, for example the service manager tried to tell me it did not have power steering so could not be faulty! A pity because it was amazing to drive.

85 corolla gt hatchback. The nz new model with no fancy electrics. Had 160k on the clock when I bought it but had to have done double that. Horribly faded red carpet. Trashed leather seats then drivers one broke while I was driving. Constant electrical and cooling system issues. Big problems with rust, roof was almost lifting off by the time I sold it. Having said all that, it was my first performance car and I had a lot of fun in it. 4age engine bulletproof.
Other bad ones of note:180sx converted to Sieighty in someone's back yard - serious electrical issues, heat shielding in firewall failure.right foot became very hot while driving. Mk 2 Golf Gti.South African assembled, unreliable mechanicals and impossible to find spares as the parts were different to German assembled.

00quattro00, Jul 28, 12:46pm
SA Mk2 and German Mk2 are identical

Not in my experience, but I did spell sileighty wrong and you missed it.

Acually the old XF Fairmont was a bit of a dog come to think of it. Drivers power window never worked properly, and door handles failed repeatedly.

On the plus side it seemed to have about 100 cig lighter sockets dotted around. That was awesome when spotlighting for rabbits, shame I never smoked though.

The headlights were bloody useless as well
