I have always believed that 'diesel' oil is OK to use in a petrol engine but not 'petrol' oil in a diesel unless stated on the containers.

Used to be, but now petrol cars have catalytic convertors and these don't like some of the additives that the diesel oils have e.g., zinc

Thanks for that.Diesel oil is a 'better' oil because of the higher pressures etc on bearings etc.

has a SM petrol rating for its primary use and a secondary RatingCF for diesel engines around 1991 .

Iv always used Magnetec in my turbo legacy and vx deisel land cruiser never had a problem so they must be right when they say its for both.

Oh I see, because you've used it in both then 'they' must be right. Great logic there.

Well it states on it that it can be used for both so i have tried it and it works.

What you ppl are thinking of is called "multi fleet oil" It's suitable for most LIGHT DUTY MODERN engines of either diesel or petrol *************** THAT bit = "LIGHT DUTY MODERN engines" ***************** The bigger the engine + heavier the loads + the older the engine =more reliance on 100% diesel engine oil

bear in mind there is now a difference between diesel oils and diesel oils
you can by DPF safe diesel oils now normally around $80-$100 for 5L
these oils MUSt be used in vehicles fitted witha diesel particulate filter
i.e. almost all euro and american diesels after 2005
can cost upwards of $10000 to fix if you block them by using the wrong oil
