Life expentancy of a radiator.

new radiator fitted in a 2004 Toyota Hiace Van, May 2011. Needed full replacement due to breakdown of seals in several areas last weekend. This is a courier van but had done approx 120,000kms on this radiator. this is not typical of courier vans. Any comments! Diesel van, all servicing and maintenance carried out every month.

Average where I work seems to be about 10 years.

What brand radiator! A radiator should last 300,000km +

bigrichie, Sep 20, 12:19am
not sure about brand, have to go to the supplier and check that out. Hes claiming if its over 12mths old its too bad and that courier vans do high kms. We keep km records weekly and its only as I said above about 120,000kms since it was done.
I have never heard of such a thing.

Imagine a radiator is your body.Feed your body on junk food dont treat it as you should . How long will it last compared to how long your body lasts if you look after it

I agree.

The OEM ones that are copper and brass are brilliant.

I have two of them; a 1991 model done 310k (on its last legs though serviceable), and the other is in a '74 car but it's a 1980 model done unknown ks and it's on its last legs although still seviceable :)

Do you want a refund or replacement after 8 years!

Too much pressure in the cooling system do you have the right cap on it and was the radiator new or from a wrecker

new radiator fitted in a 2004 Toyota Hiace Van, May 2011 . Its only 16 months old.

bigrichie, Sep 20, 2:52am
thanks Jason, yes a brand new radiator fitted by a radiator specialist in May 2011. And the van has all servicing meticulously done - in fact he drives me to distraction with the level of care and attention he pays that van.

Cold be wrong rad cap not releasing pressure new seals isnt a big job if he took it back to the place he got it from they might do it for nothing. And my wife agrees with you I did the same with our van

Could have been killed by vibration, the replacement radiator may not have been as tough as the factory one! Modern plastic and aluminium radiators just clip together.not robust like the old copper and brass ones.

therafter1, Sep 20, 3:22am
And being substantially aluminium they are susceptible to electrolysis.

flack88, Sep 20, 5:22am
Factory Toyota ones seem to last forever, especially if it has been looked after!

Oh sorry I missread. I thought you meant that the radiator was fitted in 2004.
