Transmission failure in Peugeot 206

seavu, Oct 5, 9:57pm
A relative has a Peugeot 206 coupe automatic and the transmission has failed. It is at the garage at present and they say that it can be totally rebuilt for $6,600and have a guarantee for 20,000or just a repair for $2700 with no warranty.Unsure of the year (approx 2001) and not high Ks. (under100)
Does anyone have any suggestions on which way to go!

well ring a automatic trans rebuilder place and ask how mutch it is for rebuild you need the transmission model for that Dont know what they got but like vw golf automatic is 4500$ fully rebuilt by transmission specialist

normal garage is not where to bring a car with automatic trans problem only automatic trans specialists as the garage wont ever be able to fix the thing professionally , they either contract it out and add extra$$ in there pocket, Like i service transmissions but if they have problems i tell them to take it to auto trans specialists they got all special tooling and diagnostics witch no garage can possibile have.

If they have quoted a price like that it sounds like they already have a good idea of whats wrong with it, its often not easy without stripdown first. A major failure at those sort of km's indicates either severe abuse or neglect, or a known defective part or manufacturing/assembly problem. If its the latter a second hand gearbox could be risky, which would be a more normal course of action in a vehicle of that age and value. I'd be wanting much more information about what the problem is before going any further. Talk directly to a trans rebuilder with the exact model details and describe exactly what happened, they will know if its common or not.

Thanks for your imputs. It is at the autotransmission specialist at present.Fanc123 we will take your advice and talk directly to him. What I was really wanting to know was if anyone could tell me if the repair option wouldbe a
reasonablechoice as the owner is on a tight budget.

Probably not, thats why you need to find out if its a one off problem or a common one. A second hand trans will be far cheaper, perhaps not more than $1500 fitted, assuming you can find a good one easily.

Thanks franc123.

Find out if its broken the band thats what that trans in the 206 do. And a repair of 2700 sounds like its done that, there sould not be any more damage so the cheap option would be fine.

hate to say it , but commonly known in the trade as euro trash gearbox. yes and the bands do break part is'nt expensive, its the labour to take out strip repair, assemble and back inand as they say just replacing a couple of parts is not an overhaul = no warrentee if that is the problem ( broken band ) sounds bi9t expensive to me, shop around for a price in the auckland area

thanks for that I will check on Monday about the band. I have an idea that was what they said it was.

If this has the AL4 transmission in it (which I think it does) I wouldn't fit a secondhand unit because its likely on its last legs too.

These transmissions are a stupid design that's "sealed for life" and unlike some other transmission of the type which you can easily service anyway this one does not have a sump that you can drop off to allow for a filter change.

You can muck about and change the fluid in them regularly which does extend their life but ultimately the filter will clog.

Now that said, while they do tend to die eventually from swimming in their own filth, sometimes there are other simpler problems. Like solenoid valves failing or other valve body issues.

Its hard to know what the likely cause is without knowing the symptoms that were presented. I would suggest if the car is still mobile that it be taken to a good dealer or third party specialist. Some automatic transmission specialists may be of help at the diagnosis stage but I think I would get it scanned with Peugeot software in the car first.

The other thing I would be doing is getting a sample taken of the fluid, if its dark and smelly the transmission is probably on its last legs regardless of whether the fault at present can be rectified on its own.

My 2C, best of luck with it.

Oh and unless its a late one, a convertible or something else special I would be doing my sums very carefully.
If its only worth $4000 as many of them are I would sell it on trademe "as is" for someone to fix up at home and go and buy something with a transmission you can service.
It dosn't mean you have to buy something horrible and Japanese or more expensive, there are some really nice little Euro hatches around with excellent auto transmissions that can be serviced or even better buy a manual if they are happy to drive one.
