AA Car Batteries

alpinej, Oct 7, 4:32pm
I have an AA Battery installed in my car but unfortunately it has gone flat. Am I able to recharge the battery using a battery charger or have it jump started, and once it has been jump started won't it charge itself while I drive!

I have heard somewhere that since its an AA Battery you unable to charge it yourself using a battery charge and if jump started it will work but won't charge so if you turn the engine off and try to restart it won't work.

I hope you guys know what I am going on about.

any car battery can be charged , the thing is what battery is it exactly!
it should say on the battery if its calcium then you want a special calcium charger you can buy one cheap from supersheep auto for about 50$ who can charge all battery would need to say on charger calcium . Some AA ones are old type lead they charge with any old charger

if the battery is flat means there is no charge if you jumpstart it it will start but there is still no charge . logically the car has its own charger but that will need about 30 minutes to bring some charge back in to the battery otherwise there simply is not enough power in the battery to start it when you start it and turn it straight off. it all has to do with logic.

With alternators, I believe that some won't charge a totally flat battery, unlike a dynamo, so needsa battery charger to put some charge in first.

Happy for someone to correct me on thisIt might be an old wives tale or just totally out of date.

Correct. Alternator's won't fully recharge a dead flat battery a lot of the time.

We have quite a bit of trouble with Falcon and Territory batteries, as they use a new calcium battery which require a deeper and slightly higher recharge. The alternator's fitted to them keep them charged fine, but if you run one flat the alternator won't recharge it. We quite often have to fit loan batteries to cars so we can charge the calcium battery overnight, or once its out of warranty, we just fit a normal lead battery instead.

Your quite correct, the AA batteries have a special chip installed and will not charge from flat unless you reset this chip. The cheat way to do this without incuring a service fee is to insert your AA membership card between the positive terminal clamp and the battery, then insert your key into the drivers door. you must then decode the battery by using your membership number and your car key in the door. start with a left turn of the key for the first numberthen a right for the next. i.e if your membership is 1234 then insert key and turn left once, right twice, left three times and right four times, untill your whole membership number is entered, then jump start car and battery will charge fine.

.

Thats the system for British AA batteries. As I understand it with NZ batteries you have to use the passenger door and enter the membership number backwards. If the car is red, grey or white the number has to be entered in binary digits.
