Went for a warrant today and failed need 4 new tyres BUT I was only getting a warrant so I could sell the car( because I don't really use it and have a new work car) the tyres are still good but cracked around the sides. Any ideas! Car is not worth much but they wanted to charge me $800 for new ones. Shall I sell it as is! No warrant or get new tyres!

If the tyres have cracks around the side wall then yeah replace them. if you want sell the car with a warrant what about getting used tyres!

Been looking around for second hand ones but they are 17" and hard to find. Think it cause I'm a girl they trying to over charge me. :(

unbeatabull, Oct 18, 9:16am
$200 a tyre for 17" is very reasonable for a mid-range tyre.

I bought a cheap set of 17's from firestone, chinese somethings, were $135 each, low profile

Thanks I'll try them

You've got better chances looking here on TM for used 2nd hand tyres. You can easily score yourself 4 tyres for $300 or less.

Hi Kate. Checkout this listing 523867268, they are in Petone and havea lot more sizes (you didn't post what size you require). I've bought a few different tyres from them and they are pretty good guys.

I need 215/40/r17 got quotes today reckon they can do for $115 each at Tony's also got another place to look at them and they reckon they should pass a warrant BUT the tyres were wet at the time so you couldn't see the cracking.

Just be carefull of the real "cheap" ones, might handle like a pig, and dont go to tonys, they dont know shit

Problem is I want to sell the car so don't want to spend heaps as I won't get that back when I sell it, gonna get stuff all for it anyway.Only wanting a WOF to sell, but also don't want to sell with unsafe tyres on it.

Well get a second opinion don't trust one persons opinion.

5236, Oct 19, 5:40am
I've had 2 more opinions one said it will pass and the other said it wouldn't, 2 against one I guess I'm on the hunt for new tyres. :(

suplyuparts, Oct 19, 9:24am
If you was in AKL i could get you a set of 4 tyres brand new for 380 my price.

johnf_456, Oct 19, 9:27am
Fair enough

What car s it! I for one would rather buy a cheap car with worn tires and spend extra on good tires, rather than buying a car with crap tires. This does depend on the car in question. Up to you really tho.

It's a Toyota curren 1996

Thanks ;)

vtecintegra, Oct 19, 10:28am
I have a set of them on the back of my car.

They're surprisingly okay for the money, quiet and pretty hard wearing so far. Grip isn't great especially in the wet but that's to be expected for the price

vr4_legnum, Oct 19, 10:29am
What about looking for factory set of 14' or 15' Toyota alloy rims. Might be able find set with ok tyres. And then just sell the 17' mags on trademe.
