dont know how they work with vw its easy done and with fiat you need the red master key to programm other keys. bmw is also easy . done the bove cost about 150$ all up chip key and programming.

you can also buy computers that have the chip deleted from uk.

Got an 03 Maxima. Bought key blanks from dealextreme. Don't come with chips. Have to find the NATS code on the side of the car's computer for a local locksmith to be able to provide and program chips. stilll about $300 bucks worth.
Poster Fatmat knows a bit more about it. But it's pretty much a waste of time.

my father mistakenly threw the transponder chip from his 02 BMW key down the stormwater drain, cost him $180 for mobile locksmith to program a new one for him
