Why didn't you tell us it was for that, thus eliminate all the illogical suggestions!

The suggestions were not illogical. I like to consider all possibilities and choose the best. Having tried it out, it's a bit of a pain running from end to end with a red filter. Maybe a separate switchable tail light is the way to go. The original used a red filter but they didn't go forwards and backwards quite so often. They also possibly used a steam powered arc lamp, which is not as safe as a simple switch and a battery.

What track is it on that tail lights become important! Don't modern rail wagons have more than 1 tail light!.

buy from a red light tail lens shop. Thats faily strightforward isnt it!
