. My old mans Nissan Homy (E24) has no 5th gear. You select it and theres no drive. No ugly noises - just no drive in five. Any suggestions would be welcomed

Remove offending box, take to gearbox specialist, get quoted more than the van is worth to repair. Buy 2nd hand unit from a wreckers and putit back in.

Sounds like a problem with the fifth gear hub / baulk ring / dog teeth. If you have some mechanical ability you may be able to remove the rear housing from the gearbox without removing complete box from vehicle and have a look see. Is reverse still working coz I think fifth and reverse are on the same selector shaft!
