Sure that means some faily "Spirited" driiving, but it is certainly not impossible.[/

Oops! too late when you kill a innocent road user please slow down you may be next

Wife was ticketed last week here, 111kph while overtaking. $80.00 to the state, really improved road safety. Yeah Right.

kiwishaq, Nov 14, 9:30pm
Make sure you stop at Riverstone Kitchen just north of Oamaru.

But there are people above in this thread saying it isn't possible.
I don't recall ever timing a quick trip to Dn, but I bet I've done it in about 3 1/2 hours as well, probably as recently as the '90s when I was doing about 50,000km / year on business, 125km/h was the standard setting on cruise control, unless I was in a hurry.
Times have changed.

3½ hours was my normal time from Chch to Dunedin (or vice-versa) during the '70's and '80's.

I was a sales rep, and had Datsun 1600 and HQ Holdens.

I usually cruised at 70MPH (112Kph) even in the days of 80Kph limits, and only ever got one ticket.

As with all driving, keep your eyes open, concentrate, anticipate, and drive to the conditions.

My best was in an XJ6, when I left Chch at 08:00, went to Dunners, worked four hours, and was back in Chch by 17:00.

Its 361kms from Dunedin to CHCH.So not taking in Oamaru and Timaru that take forever to get through it still takes 3.61 hours at 100kph with no hold ups at all, no 50kph areas, no road works, nor corners, no 70kph areas no trucks, etc etc etc.Mind you I guess you can be liberal to where DN ends and CHCH starts which could knock half an hour off.
I to a while back did from the prison (in CHCH/ Rollostenwrong spelling I think.) to Gore in 4.5 hours actual on road time on a motorcycle. Took more real time due to fuel stops coffee break etc etc and I can assure you it was waaaaay over 112kph to do it. And I wasnt held up by cars etc so big advantage there for a start. But yea an HQ could do it easy.

Most of the times in this thread I can believe.
But.0800-1700.
9hours.
Minus 4 hours work is 5 hours travelling, so 2.5 hours each way.

Tui anyone!

Ok - I call foul on that claim too. My claim of 1 hour 20 minutes Kaikoura to Chch in 1982 was average just under 140 km/h, about 85 mph. That was on a modified guzzi lemans which would get to 125 mph (speedo) very quickly, 140 mph (speedo) max on a long straight. It seemed I was never going slower than 90mph, sitting at 120mph much of the time, but average was only 85. No stops - made it one one tank. That was insane riding, trying 10/10 all the way.I didn't stop shaking for hours, and sold the bike about a fortnight later - as it was going to sell me.
There were faster bikes then, but very few faster cars (excluding true exotics - and an old XJ6 wouldn't have been in the race by a long shot).2.5 hours Chch to Dunedin is possible, but not very likely. Average about 145 km/h. Even if you had a vehicle capable of doing it, you'd be in no state to work for 4 hours, then do the same time on the return trip.

i heard of a fella going from rolleston township to picton wharf in about 3hrs 59mins at about 7pm a few years back in a truck govened to 95km/h with no trailer in tow but i don't think they were game enough to admitt to "straight-lining" or cutting the corners or not hehe

Frankly, m'dear, I don't give a damn what beer you drink.

I was the one driving, I know what I did.

My late father was with me as passenger, his car, it was only 5 years old at the time, and was perfectly capable of such a trip in safety and comfort.

Most of the time, I was over 80mph, and had no dramas whatsoever.

It is not the ultimate speed that counts on a trip like this, but the entry and exit speeds when cornering, and the number of holdups you meet on the way.

I had not long returned from living in England, and was used to the gresater speeds over there, plus I had done quite a lot of Continental driving, where there were virtually no limits at that time.

ralphdog1, Nov 15, 10:19pm
You would need to have been, because you are actually claiming to have averaged 90mph.

mortluby, Nov 16, 3:27am
There is every chance.
Back in the early 90's (no MoT and the police went to bed at 7), from the Hornby Clock Tower to Pine Hill = 2:55. This is around 300 km so it's only an average of 102 km/h. Was sitting on 140k on every straight from Chch to Oamaru and slowed down for all the towns (I never have and never will speed in towns). Was a rally car (went around corners well).

strobo, Nov 16, 12:07pm
its easy donelol

tgray, Nov 16, 1:16pm
I'm starting to think I won't stop at all!
Thanks for you tips, but all Iv'e got so far, is a Museum, a steam engine, a fish and chip shop and an ice cream shop to visit on the way.
Surely there's more than this to visit!

trogedon, Nov 16, 4:14pm
Agreed. That was when there were no heavy vehicle roads to by pass towns so unless they knew all the back roads they'd have to go through them all. Also the tyres and handling on those cars was not up to high speed cornering. They didn't even have a fifth gear.
