How to change the type/size of tyres

jussa, Nov 28, 1:13am
currently we have 255/55R17 tyres on our 2000 TOyota estima. seeing they are expensive i was wondering (because i dont know) if you can change the tyre size, make etc to a cheaper but still good set. cheers

yes - find out the original wheel size and type and buy some from a wrecker or similar. I'd guess 15s!

2000 Toyota estima
http://specs.amayama.com/884/ Factory size is 215/60/16 Your current 255/55/17 tyres are WAY over height for factory gearing & correct speedo reading. At 100kph on YOUR speedo, you are in fact doing 107kph http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp!action=submi
t

you would be fine going to the std 16" rims & a 225/55/16 tyre
Seeing as you are already over height for tyres at the current spec, theres no way reasonable that you can go to a lower profile without costing more tehn what you are already paying.
Sadly in fact, you need to go back to the 16" rims to get a cheaper profile tyre AND the correct speedo reading.

If the factory wheels are in fact 215 60 16 then the correct tyre for the 17s is 255 45 17. not sure on the cost of them though. I know you can get 235 45 17s for spot50 or there abouts.

General rule is .
The lower the profile, the more they cost & the faster they wear out + the harder they are on the suspension. & the firmer the ride (read "harder on bumps")

bellky, Nov 28, 1:52am
They've^ only got 2-3mm of tread so you're gonna need tyres shortly anyway.

mrfxit, Nov 28, 2:01am
Why . the 2mm depth tyres I put on the Surf 30.000 kms ago are still warrentable. ;-)

kazbanz, Nov 28, 2:13am
Of course the idea is Buy these wheels. Fit them to the estima then advertise your 17's to someone with maybee a Tianna or late skyline

mrfxit, Nov 28, 2:18am
LOL Kaz. you are a bit of a mess this week, 1st you;re grumpy & now you're repeating your self ;-)

bellky, Nov 28, 2:22am
Whatever lol!

mrfxit, Nov 28, 2:26am
It's true, I can even give you the auction number that had those tyres & my then & current kms reading along with receipts of when they were fitted & have ONLY just this month swapped them over for another pair BUT the others are STILL warrentable (just)
;-) ~

after a lot of calling around, getting different points of view from people. i have decided that im going with this dude who explained it to me the best on the phone. who suggested 215/55/17 @ $90 per tyre second hand . he said there is 80%tread left so ill check that out when i get there. have to drive out of town for it. While i am there ill check out the 225/55/16s as well.
