I haven't watched but I assume its talking about independantly controlled valves effectively meaning no camshafts etc.
Certainly not new technology, but it is the future for the ICE engine. I know BMW and Ford have both got working concepts, and Im sure the VW/Audi or PSA group have also been developing something like this as well.

And interesting about the pneumatic systems that they reckon could be coming along in the future too.
