If its an external leak, just put a seal kit in it. It's not hard or expensive.

I very much doubt it.
Your best bet - if on a budget - is to get the leak looked at by someone who's got some expertise. It's possible that some seals might be able to be replaced without removing the pump to solve the immediate problem. If it's done high KMs though, it's probably shagged and in need of a rebuild.
Don't go to a regular car mechanic - you need a diesel specialist.

think its leaking between the pump and the block itself if that makes sense! mechanic ive takin to pretty good he said witout pulling it out looks pretty shaged

It's very hard to see where they're leaking - it needs to be cleaned up thoroughly with ie spray degreaser, hosed off gently and left to dry completely, then started and inspected closely.

What about waterblasted to within an inch of its life, then air blasted while up on a hoist until its bone dry. You got a hoist in your shed aye bro! Then started up and keenly observed for the leak. In any rate . do a search on here for a post about these pumps that feature a certain mrfixit and a dude called magnificient. its got extremely good info on this stuff.

you will very soon be told you should have used an additive

fivestar2010, Mar 15, 7:12am
ive only owned it for 3weeks i always usualy use edt additive or moreys

mm12345, Mar 15, 7:15am
LOL.
Sorry that's not funny really. You've been done - no doubt the seller had the pump looking all clean, shiny, and dry.

incar., Mar 15, 7:23am
i was advised by Simms diesel and turbo that there is no need to add any additive, with the pump you can do the control shaft seal and top seal in place, if its leaking from in between pump and the distribution housing (rear steel casting which the injector pipes screw onto) then its pump off

intrade, Mar 15, 7:29am
why would you fit another pump that is going to leak 2 minutes later also.
The problem is the Diesel its called ulsd problem. You should have usedflashlube or winns edt diesel additive or morreys stop smoke, these all prevent seal shrinkage add lubrication to the new low sulfur diesel.
If the pump is not stuffed all togatheryou can get it resealed and then use a additive with each tank of diesel. or in some case the additive actuarly can unshrink the seals and make em soft again unless the seal is split rock hard phisically broken.

intrade, Mar 15, 7:33am
Yea well the problem would be the last owner flogged it off because he never used a additive, does it have any other signs of not running right, the seal is probably split when it dripps hard as it was rock solid hard from morons neglecting to use any additive.

If its still runs ok no exess smoke and there like then you can reseal the pump. Otherwise you need a resealed pump thats been checked for internal wear and then use the additive all the time.
Moreis i dont know how good it is but flashlube stopped a dripping pump within 1 day but wont fix a rockhard crackedseal

trader_84, Mar 15, 7:35am
Weren't you talking about sticking a turbo on something like this not too long ago!

intrade, Mar 15, 7:40am
also post what engine its got 87 to 88 was the change over from good to crap cilinder heads i run a 82 hilux engine on my 91 hilux because of this.

mrfxit, Mar 15, 8:26am
Right. lets get a little bit better info going .

Is your model a turbo or non turbo!
Is the replacement pump off a turbo or non turbo.
The turbo pumps are a little different to the non turbo units.

Has your engine got a tin tappet cover (bolts around the edge) or alloy cover (3 bolts down the center)
Both use different pumps + the difference between turbo & non turbo

Getting the replacement pump pressure tested & possibly calibration checked BEFORE fitting would be a very good idea & would probably be around $100 to $150 + maybe seals (which would be an easy job off the vehicle.
(Something I need to investigate on $$ my self, soon-ish)

To replace the pump, you will (for best access), need to remove the radiator /front engine cover / cam belt & air cleaner to get at the pump properly.
you are going to need some ground covers under the truck for spilled fuel, Large cardboard box's opened up are good for that.

got a tip for finding diesel leaks or any other leak, clean well and dry really dry then puff talcum powder on it .Puff not pour so there is light dusting on the pump .Start engine and watch and you can see the track where its leaking from and the smelly old diesel smells nice too haha

frytime, Mar 16, 5:21am
if it is leaking between the pump and the block, my pick will be the timmer piston seal. happened to me and by golly the ute was gutless

mantagsi, Mar 17, 4:13am
Now that is a good tip, cheers! :)
