New mustang 4 or 8

Can't help raising this. The eco tech puts out the kind of power some V8's dreamed of, and gives a lighter pointier front end from early road tests. In NZ it's probably the better car with plenty of power, nice steering, and benefit of decent economy.
So except for the noise is the v8 worth it?
Tried finding early sales figures from states to see whether yanks are buying or shunning the Ecotec but can't find anything. Wonder if it will fail just because its a 4 and mustang buyers insist on v8. Like the ecotec falcon?

On a very similar topic,
I would be keen to know how well the ecoboost F150s are selling.
They use a 3.5L turbo petrol for 272kw and 570NM.
They seem to get good reviews, but would face the same issue of overcoming peoples tendancies to buy the V8 just because its a V8.

might be called "Claytons mustang". Claytons is the brand name of a non-alcoholic, non-carbonated beverage coloured and packaged to resemble bottled whisky. It was the subject of a major marketing campaign in Australia and New Zealand in the 1970s and 1980s, promoting it as "the drink you have when you're not having a drink"

tgray, Feb 15, 10:53pm
I just wouldn't want to own a 4 cylinder mustang, full stop.

edangus, Feb 15, 11:03pm
Just NO! Even if we get the V6 option. Seriously, lets get back to the Straight 6 and whack a couple of Turbos on it. Far too many V6s out there.

franc123, Feb 15, 11:37pm
Its just fundamentally wrong, as it was with Falcon. You're not going to walk into the pub and say you've just bought a Mustang 4, regardless of how powerful it is. It will cause mouths to gape, handles to hit the bar, and possibly backsides to hit the wall.

nzjay, Feb 15, 11:46pm
Nothing wrong with a twin turbo'd V6. Think Nissan GTR for example.

tgray, Feb 15, 11:48pm
We won't be getting the V6 version in NZ. Only the V8 or 4 cylinder ones.

tamarillo, Feb 16, 12:05am
I read they outsell v8 easily and yanks accept them, it mentioned it in article about the 4 cylinder mustang.

tamarillo, Feb 16, 12:10am
Get point to but will new breed of buyers agree! Do people care or will they simp,y go for best all rounder? The four has more grunt then standard v8 mustangs of past (accepting special cars). And probably steers and handles better. Over here it's a special muscle car but in US it is also compact coupe.
Hey when the yanks accepted the Prius it opened all kinds of possibilities.
Ps. IMO the ecotec falcon was nicer drive than the six.
But the noise?

edangus, Feb 16, 12:14am
Gotta agree. But I am a In Line 6 man.

nzjay, Feb 16, 1:31am
So am I, having had 3 Nissan RB 6's and Valiants before that.
But, nothing wrong it would seem with modern V6's. I currently drive a 350GT Nissan.
It's interesting the big power advances out of 4cyl engines now tho.

Totally worth it.

The whole reason you buy a Ford Mustang is so that you can listen to the sweet sweet burble of that 4-cylinder engine.

(And to put the rag top down so your hair can flowwwwwwww. )

I think the 4 door ford focus turbo Awd is likely to be a more interesting car though more expensive than the Mustang.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/news/65772995/Ford-Focus-RS-goes-AWD Ford have more than a dozen new models over the next few years. http://www.torquenews.com/106/early-mustang-ecoboost-popularity-shows-need-turbo-4-6th-gen-camaro (Must be selling4 cylinders to write this)
http://www.drive.com.au/new-car-reviews/2015-ford-mustang-ecoboost-first-drive-review-20140926-10mjg2.html (Not much eco about the 4 cylinder turbo if the foot is put down)

Part of the F truck ecoboost story was to give the f150 ecoboost a better intercooler than the original.

elect70, Feb 16, 2:57am
Anyway arent they having problems with the 4 pot ecoboost donk . just gotta have an V8convertable mustang other wise its hairdressers car

sr2, Feb 16, 3:31am
I thought the Mustang convertible was the original hairdresser's car?

mike1345, Feb 16, 3:35am
I can't think of one single reason why I'd want to buy a Mustang without the V8, considering the sound of the V8 is about the only reason I'd want one.

Not that I'd want one, I can think of a million cars I'd rather buy for the price of a new Mustang.

tgray, Feb 16, 4:47am
I don't even like the look of them. Check out the sloping rear end. Uugg! I'm sorry but that is just nasty.
The 2010+ Camaro's look better to me.

brapbrap8, Feb 16, 9:07am
The thing you guys are missing, is with the 4 cylinder you do get the sound of the V8.
As with many new cars it has a clever system that creates an artificial engine note, so that while your driving you can't tell what engine is under the bonnet as they all sound good.

So same sound, same or maybe better performance, better fuel consumption, better handling.
The 4 cylinder will be a logical choice for many people.

chook90, Feb 16, 9:15am
Looking at the engine technology employed in the 4 cylinder version I would be mighty tempted to swing that way and bank on the massive variety of aftermarket tuning options.
Frankly for less money spent on the 4 cylinder (including mods) it would destroy the V8 versions we will see here.

ryanm2, Feb 16, 9:21am
Exactly - the new Ford GT - one of the ultimate exotic sports cars is only going to be a V6. Why people would insist on a new V8 mustang is beyond me, if you want memories and nostalgia buy an old v8 mustang, drop a couple of viagra and put your Eagles 8 track in the slot.

franc123, Feb 16, 9:23am
You need to understand TRUE Mustang ownership isn't and never was about practicality, too precise steering and handling, and certainly wasn't about economy and efficiency, that's all for wusses. It was about a grunty primitive drivetrain wrapped in a sporty macho styled reasonably compact package that brings out the larrikin in you when the mood takes, and optioning it the way YOU want it with accessory and hp upgrades. Why anyone would want to spoil this with eco friendly four pots is anyone's guess, it doesn't have the same effect no matter what you do.

ryanm2, Feb 16, 9:28am
Ford Motor Co. disagrees with you.
