2001 Mazda Familia SP20 'AT' Fault

Hi all.

Im having trouble with my auto.
Its clunking a bit as if it is changing gears when it shouldn't be. Tends to happen in gears 1-2 most of the time, low speed. It was jumping from what felt like N to 1st the other day when at the lights with 'AT' light flashing.
Has been into a workshop but no fault was found. Also I did a trans service a few weeks back and it felt better for a few days before it started again.
I had it tonight when leaving the shop play up. When changing from 'R' to 'M', it came up in 4th then quickly changed to 3rd before I changed it to 1st.

Im guessing solenoid or noids, or valve body.
Anyone have any advise?

Thanks, Tim

so how was the trans service done?
removed transmission sump adjusted bands change filter and then replaced fluids?

Nope just removed sump, new filter and oil.

That's a speed sensor fault I'm sure, it gives false readings to the trans controller and completely screws up the shift pattern. A friend had that exact problem. Take it to a trans specialist or a Mazda agent to confirm, given the AT lamp has been flashing there will be a fault code logged.

Oh cool, never thought of that. Might give that a go and see. Thanks.

It was in a trans shop today but there are no codes present. They couldn't find anything even on the road test. I got 2km up the road and it was there.

They may need it for more time and actually get it to fault with the scan tool hooked up, I remember with my mates car she said it was doing odd things weeks before the warning light came up and the problem could be pinpointed. In the end it was looking at the actual reading that the ECU was getting from the sensor that revealed it, I can't say 100% if it logged a code, it generally is if the AT or OD lamp flashes. It is the nature of these faults sometimes.

mazda ARE a nightmare just because they dont get no codes dont means there are none . only oem capable scanner will read out if there are codes and only if the software is in the tool is for the year and model whom you have . dont go buy a nissan thats no better either from, 2005 onwards only advantage is on nissan you dont have 100 tausend different parts on the same year make and model like on mazda

Yep, it may be a case of getting it to a Mazda dealer to check. it could be quicker and cheaper.

Thanks guys. Will look into it some more.

yea that's something that can't be diagnosed over the internet. Could be a TPS, speed sensor etc. Sounds electrical as opposed to a mechanical fault.
