2008 mazda atenza wheel/tyre fitmemt

ct9a, Jun 21, 5:28am
Hi my partner has taken the family car to a mag shop in tauranga who has fitted 19x9.5 wheels on the wheel is sticking a good 30mm out side guard and tyres Chinese ones stretched on
I've had minor talks as un happy and feel it's illegal for Wofs as an ex Avi holder and attached rules from virm and lvtaa to back this up he says it's legal and plans to lower it around 40mm bringing the top of wheel in and rolling the guard but I dobt they will fit even or inside the oe guard. . I thought only Falken could be stretched ?
Like to hear more thoughts on this as he has really talked him self up and has my partner convicted he knows what he's doing and in his words he's more up to the play with wof holders or any mechanics in regards to this. I can email anyone pics as it sits now if you want.

Most tyres can be stretched to some extent and the LVVTA has a tyre to rim compatibility guide with recommendations. It so happens that Falken certifies their tyres as stretchable somewhat beyond the LVVTA recomendations. Also Avon and Nankand do similar I think.

Yes I have found that chart
But the rim and tyre must be inside the guard

Bollocks if any part of the tread where it finishes contacting the road is projecting further out than the guard then it isn't as it stands warrantable. Don't accept advice from individuals who are not AVI's, and especially not tyre shop flunkies who claim to know the legalities of these things when they clearly don't, and don't have to take responsibility for it neither. If he is an AVI and is dispensing such advice and approving such mods I'm sure NZTA would be very interested, remember if these people were actually experts in these things they would be working elsewhere and earning better money.

The shop don't do wofs just an independent mag and tyre shop.

Well that speaks for itself doesn't it.

As an aside. Falkens cannot be stretched onto rims any more. Email from the supplier came through last month.

Have found that also and sent that . This is to adens tyres tauranga
Have just asked a while lot more questions and his reply
Leave me alone please

I would take the car to your local testing station.I was told that this-fitting non standard rims/tyres is a modification that requires engineering certification, would have it checked, the guy who sold you the rims/tyres is hardly likely to be unbiased. His email response is not very professional.

Those rims and tyres look very nice on that car. Can you put some stick on wheel arch flares on maybe, you should keep that combo if you can.

jan106, Jun 21, 6:28pm
I suggest you go to a reputable tyre outlet and get their opinion. Ask them to contact their technical support person for advice

I went back and looked at the pics. You are right in saying that its the wrong fitment. Stretching tyres onto rims makes the sidewalls weak. The rims shouldnt stick out beyond the guards either

clark20, Jun 21, 6:43pm
Those rims are just aching to find a curb

vtecintegra, Jun 21, 6:44pm
Now that is a matter of opinion.

When asked this morning if he can honestly say it's legal he has rang my partner and requested the wheels and tyres be returned
