I will edit, the rubber hose that went from the pump to the carb, Happened to me, bearing in mind my hose was over 25 years old when it happend, and there was a change in the fuel that some rubbers didnt handle to well.

Hi. I had a Mk1 Cortina with a Pinto.
I was given this book from my parents. Its really good guid from standard through to fully worked/cossie head mods. All in stages with expected results.
Its well worth a read if you can get one. Highly recommend it.

Murray from Weber specialties in Silverdale used to have a kit to turn one of the 2 barrel downdraught weber carbs from progressive to single acting with 2 1/4 gears that attached to the throttle shafts. Maybe dfav or dfag from memory its been a long time. He will know. it worked well. It had way more pick up off the line with the same top end.
