Only difference is the front grille which is slightly different between the L and the J. The main reason for the two models was that each was sold through a different dealership chain in Japan. The L was sold through Toyota Corolla dealers while the J was sold through Toyota Netz dealers.

Absolutely correct from memory one has the'honeycomb' grill and the other has the 'Criss cross '

Depends on the year/model, on the early 2000's J is the 1800cc front wheel drive model.

I was also told they were from different assembly plants. Which aligns with what #3 sez.

I have a 2000 J and it is 2L model and 4wd
