Why don't cars with rear view cameras.

Have them mounted in the rear window behind the glass ?

Most have them mounted under lip of the boot or rear tailgate this leaves them open to being covered in water and dirt. Certainly they could on the hatchbacks (not so easy on the sedans)

The new Subaru Accent will use this type of system and in fact does away with the rear view mirror, replacing it with a screen instead (which also means that you can have the boot piled to the roof but still have a rear view.

boot would block view of suicidal baby behind car
&
nodding dog might knock camera alignment off

Yes a car with a boot would be problematic, but hatchbacks having the camera inside would be better I would thin,.

Absolutely, . it would be great if someone invented a devise that could reflect and deflect the rear facing images to the drivers vision. it'll come I suppose, & next thing these devises will need no energy input to work

Consider that the cameras used in F1 for example, seem to have a self cleaning arrangement.

Relying 100% on anything electronic always carries a risk of malfunction, so I'd be fitting an interior mirror anyway.
