Don't think saying 320 is junk, millions of happy punters. Not the best BMW motor and yes some failures, but most makes have them. A good one that's got a good service history and is well checked is still good.
Personally I'd prefer the six cylinder model though, just a classic lovely motor. Doesn't matter which, and they change by year, and I'm assuming in his price range the bigger number models you mention are still the six cylinder versions ( more recently they use four cylinder 2 litre for 328 ).
He should be able to get into a 330 which is great blend of performance without extra complication of the 335 turbo engine.
I'd go 330, but if they're not fussed on performance and prefer economy the 318 or 320 are fine if thouroughly checked.
Ps. Tell them to test ride a Motorsport. With the m sport suspension it can prove too hard for NZ roads for some.

Don't touch an E90 variant four cylinder. Even BMW specialists will warn you against them. If you want a BMW, buy a decent one with at least a six cylinder engine.
