When to buy mechanical breakdown insurance?

When buying a 2009 used car, how many years would the CGA cover mechanical problems?

Is it reasonable that it would cover at least 1 year? Then to purchase MBI subsequent years?

Billy-it depends not just on the year of manufacture,-Miles travelled, the specific make/model and your maintainence of the vehicle also are factors.
Sorry if this sounds vague but that's the law.

I was looking at W204 Mercedes C250 or C300, with mileage around 70000km. Expect to do only about 15000km per year.

Having read about European makes on the forum, I thought it is better to get an Autosure MBI. But they're expensive, 3 years $1990 (extreme) or $1600 (essential). So I thought if CGA is legally covering at least a year, then I can buy the MBI for 2nd year - 4th year.

Nope it doesn't work like that Billy. MBI is purchased at time of purchase of the car. Go back to the dealer 12 months after purchase and most likely you'll need to get a Full PPI carried out before they will do it--if they will at all.
