Audi a4 2,0, engine light on and car surging

thejazzpianoma, Jul 23, 4:02am
Without at least scanning it we can at best speculate. Do you have torque or access to a basic scanner? What year/model A4 is it?

at a random guess i would take a stab at a vac intake leakage after the mass airflow meter cracked hose would make 99% cars surge or hose fallen off intake. poor brakes would also be a symptom of a large hole

I would tend to think that something has either fallen off or split open in the intake system, which may or may not have been caused by the previous work, especially if there is also odd idle behaviour or poor throttle response.

obviously it will have to go to a mechanic to be sorted

That's likely the CVT one, it's a good unit but would be wise to check he has been servicing it.
There are a couple of 2.0 engines options in that one. Both are pretty reliable so I wouldn't expect anything major if that's any comfort. On board diagnostics are very good on those showing loads of data so hopefully it will be quick to sort.
There is a very good and affordable VW specialist scanner available now that goes with your phone. Might be wise for him to invest in one to keep in the car. Can be quite invaluable even if he is not a mechanic as it can give us some idea as to where to direct you next time.

It's still wise to keep one in every car (even if it's a $7 one from here that you use with torque) with modern vehicles. Even if you don't know what the codes mean you can ask advice on here. Otherwise, such inquiries are pretty pointless with nothing to go on.

the-lada-dude, Jul 23, 6:05pm
Barretts ? . I'm surprised we would use such a large caliber sniper rifle, anything with a Whitworth barrel used to be the go

Did he have the spark plugs replaced when cam belt was done ? Could be a faulty plug . They are due for replacement .

thejazzpianoma, Jul 24, 8:24am
With the main dealer, if the fix sounds expensive feel free to hit us up for an opinion. Just make sure you get a copy of all codes and other information. Best of luck.
BTW, if it's been properly maintained I am not expecting anything major, more than likely a throttle body clean or some such. Can only speculate without at least the codes though.

dodgy coil would be classed under missfires.

martin11, Jul 27, 6:27pm
Thats good the plugs should have been replaced when the belt was done .
Glad to know it is now fixed for you .

kazbanz, Jul 27, 7:17pm
ive been following with nowt to add-Thinking disturbed hoses etc when belt was done. But even if he can't afford to do all the plugs --at least do the one plug that matches the coil

thejazzpianoma, Jul 28, 6:36am
I almost suggested that as very common on that model, I even had one go on a car with 2000km on the clock. Could have been all kinds of things though. Just make sure he keeps the maintenance up on it and don't forget the CVT service.

Well done mate giving credit when credit is due, this forum doesn’t acknowledge help when given often enough, yes there are some posters who can be rather effusive, but when they are on song with information about a subject that they are knowledgeable about they are invaluable.
Yes it is disappointing that your kids have gone audi and bmw, for sure they should have gone Mercedes-Benz.

My pleasure, just sorry I couldn't have been of more help. Thanks for the acknowledgment and I admire your humility, it's a wonderful trait to have.

Have a great weekend, your kind words have made my day.
