Toyota buys Lyft's self-driving unit for US$550 m

Many people including me believe that true self-driving cars will never be successful on ordinary roads such as we have in NZ.
I am not talking about lane change assist or emergency brake assist, so you don't need to mention them.

I am talking only about cars that can drive from one ordinary road to another, negotiating traffic lights, and road works with Stop Go men (they are always men aren't they?). There are deluded people who think that is going to happen. They seem to work for Toyota!

And they said man would never walk on the moon either.
It will happen, in fact its already happening.

It will happen it's just a matter of when

Futurist: "One day we shall have a mode of transportation that are entirely mechanical"

Futurist: "One day we shall have vehicles that can transport us half way around the world in less than a day"

Futurist: "One day we shall have machines that can calculate incredible sums in mere minutes"

Futurist: "One day a pocket sized device that nearly everybody shall own will vastly surpass the combined computer power we have now"

Futurist: "One day we will have an electric car that can travel hundreds of kilometers at highway speeds on a single charge"

Futurist: "One day we will have a car that can scan the road for obstacles and automatically avoid many of them"

.

Futurist: "One day we shall have artificial intelligent specialist systems sufficiently powerful that they can be used to construct fully autonomous self driving vehicles to transport people and goods safely"

with current technology self driving cars wont be possible Steve wos who was co-founder of apple-mac said it wont be possible. If quantum computing works one day potentially but we could then also get therminators if Ai gets smarter then humans .
What will most probably come is drone taxi= way less complex to navigate as we already have one fly on mars.

Yes, but not to drive a car while not holding the steering wheel.
Have you not seen what happened on a race track when a self-drive car crashed twice?

Are you aware of Moore's Law? Computers are getting much better very quickly.

poppy62, Apr 28, 4:19pm
Exterminate! Exterminate ! could become the catch cry for AI. Would solve most of the problems on this planet. hang on a tick, the phone is ringing. I think it's the Lawnmower man. Seriously though, I reckon by 2030 Self drive will be all the rage.

"In his lifetime" I would probably agree with, he's not a young man.

But extolling Wozniak's opinion on AI or self driving cars is no better than somebody asking Gates if the internet would take off back in 1990. Wozniak's primary claim to fame is that he designed a couple of 8 bit computers, not ones that were especially interesting or innovative technologically for the time just ones that got marketed well, and not by Woz.

AFAIK he has no background in AI research, and hasn't designed any modern systems at all that I'm aware of, nothing since the 8 bit days in the late 70s and early 80s.

Now if you could ask Jobs about it, that would be interesting, he was the real visionary an uncanny ability to get the right people to make the right thing at just the right time.

did you see that he drives the bolt GM over the tesla. Gm and toyota are the leader in electric vehicle tech they got 10+ years on tesla 1996 rav 4 and ev1 who killed the electric car docu.
And they say computers get faster and better now they dont my i5 intel is as good as any ones after that with a 2% increase as where my 1.3 amd duron 7 year older was a huge jump. its come to a end . only quantum computers would jump and any human has a quantum computer called a brain. Some only use only 2% of that computer power they have or so it seems.

After a lot of scary events, transport will become a 'rail car' type experience whereby there will be small pods on a track system - a bit like a ski lift protocol. For those that want to travel to more remote places, they will either need to of passed an incredibly expensive and difficult examination and then have to hire an appropriate means of locomotion from an approved provider. Other's will have to hire a taxi to access 'remote' areas or use a self powered bicycle.

But still very unreliable and prone to fail !

tygertung, Apr 29, 9:51am
What model number i5 please?

harm_less, Apr 29, 1:16pm
#7 was referring to Moore's Law not Murphy's Law.

apollo11, Apr 29, 2:48pm
The US military (and others) will be slobbering over self drive tech, for obvious reasons.

tygertung, Apr 29, 4:59pm
Just run lscpu in terminal and post the output.

Toyota will be playing catchup with Waymo (part of Alphabet/ Google)

Driverless vehicles already testing in a few US cities, where the roads, buildings etc have already been scanned in detail.
