Trying to renew rego online and required to type in number plate which has a slashed zero in it. I'm on an iMac and when I do what is usual to produce a slashed zero, like this Ø, which is holding down Shift and Option keys and hitting 0, the NZTA robot tells me not to "create spaces." How does one do it? Of course I can go to NZPO to pay, but this is more convenient. Thanks

Just put a normal zero (0) in

The Ø symbol is an abbreviation for diameter so not what you require. As recommended above the slash through a zero is to differentiate it from being a capital O. Use the zero on your keyboard and all should be good.
