You’ll get opposing opinions on this. One one hand there’s dealers who love them and point out they make good cheap rentals. But then there’s folk who see all the stuffed gearboxes and scorn them. Compromise is that it’s. Weak cvt and certainly does need proper cvt specialist servicing to keep it fault free, and when they go they are disposable. Other issue is how they drive but guess that’s not up for questioning here!

They do drive very good, I know people that love them and get good km from them, At 86k I would get the CVT oil changed then good to go for another 60k or so. Piece of mind .

tamarillo, Sep 14, 3:00am
Opposing opinion then. drive horribly and cheaply made disposable rubbish.

tgray, Sep 14, 3:36am
Depends what you are comparing it to.
A lot of basic, 15 year old, cheap hatchbacks drive about the same.
"drive horribly"? cheap rubbish"? There not that bad and for non car people, they do the job perfectly fine. Great leg room, especially for rear passengers and huge boot.
What I personally don't like, are the huge soft seats that have no support. Feels like your in an armchair.
Gearboxes? I have sold hundreds of them over nearly 20 years and no one has ever come back to me with a problem. Ever.
By the way, I usually sell them with between 70k and 140k.

We had a Tiida rental car down south last year because it was cheap. CVT worked ok , handling was good and I got up to some illegal speeds on deserted back roads, but the foot-pedal "handbrake" was a pain in the ar*se when trying to do a hill start - not enough feet to work all the pedals! Speedo and odometer read about 12% too high but fuel consumption very meagre - over 49 miles per gallon in figures old guys can understand. Hard ride and noisy - our 20 year old Accord felt like a Rolls-Royce when we drove it on return home!

up to 140 k on ours, they all have a slight cvt whine. ive changed the fluid twice on ours, a very easy job. there's no filter just type II fluid out and fluid back in . easy

tgray, Sep 14, 4:12am
Forget footbrake - left foot on brake, right on gas?

gazzat22, Sep 14, 5:22am
Thanks Toby ,thats reassuring. My grandson will be the driver and as hes a big lad(6ft 4) so needs something bigger than my choice which is a Demio.

kazbanz, Sep 14, 11:57am
First of all the Tiida Latio being the 1500cc Tiida NEEDS to be serviced every 60000km.
Second.-For a big lad I would actually get his backside in a DY Demio and the Tiida Latiio because I've found the demio has a fair bit of leg/head room.
Re the Tiida gearbox.I've literally sold hundreds and honestly had not one come back to me.
BUT Ive seen the main bearing in the early tiida gearbox and can see the problem. For some stupid reason they use a 2 rs /2 nsl main bearing packed with grease instead of an open bearing. The newer box has an open bearing abd the reco guys do a "simple" bearing swapout.
Personally I'd look at an Axella or Toyota Runx/ allex for a bigger kid

Thanks All They,ve decided to look elsewhere and at something different as the PPI report wasnt too good.Cheers

kazbanz, Sep 17, 9:21am
What budget is the young fella working with.?
And is he "body long" leg long" or just in proportion?
Not being a smart alec Ive see kids that seem to be all legs so need a lot of leg room

gazzat22, Sep 17, 10:26am
No Kaz .hes pretty well in proportion He learnt to drive in a DE Demio but his parents seem to think they,re too small so I,m standing back .Theyre paying for it so the budget is $4-5,000or less!

muppet_slayer, Sep 17, 10:30am
all you need is 2 feet, one for the gas and the other to let the handbrake off. POP if you ask me. Maybe you should have let someone else drive if you couldn't handle it?

kazbanz, Sep 17, 10:55am
Yea the DE is a bit small. The DY is all round bigger and mechanically "is" a Toyota Corolla.
if it helps at all our number 2 son is now in a 2004 Toyota Allex 1.8 and he is over 6 foot tall. So that would mean Allex/runx and kiwi new Corolla

gazzat22, Sep 17, 11:11am
I think I,ll just leave it to his parents now kaz. Thanks your input is appreciated.Cheers

IMHO you have to approach any modern auto with the expectation that it could develop a transmission noise that costs $3k to fix at any time.

Tiidas have excellent rear seat headroom and legroom for such a small car, and were obviously designed with a particular job in mind. If you just want the maximum useable floor space in a small town car that is easy to park, then one of these might suit your needs.

No handling, no performance, just a bloody awful little shoebox of a car in every other way, definitely not recommended for anyone who enjoys cars and driving!

I had one for a weekend in Chch as a rental car, got back in my wife's 1980s Ford laser at WLG airport afterwards, and that thing felt like a sports car with uprated suspension by comparison.

Jazzpianoman said look out for rust in the lower body areas and especially the firewall/ bulkhead at the back of the engine bay.

tgray, Sep 17, 1:33pm
Who?

richardmayes, Sep 17, 1:41pm
I miss Jazzpianoman. when he wasn't getting baited into pointless fights that did nobody any favours, he was a great poster, his views on the stuff he knew well (I.e. Fiats, Alfas, Audis and VWs) rang true somehow and was obviously born from years of experience of doing DIY engine work. Which IIRC, is what he did?

richardmayes, Sep 18, 4:15am
Hmm, username checks out.

tgray, Nov 18, 12:10am
Yes he was very knowledgeable but couldn't take it when people had an opposing opinion.
