Horrible - fuel consumption bad, higher maintainance and wieght of a 4wd system, almost left the factory with a blown headgasket. The 2003+ shape is MUCH better.

the 2.5 motor was cronic for blown head gaskets. but the two litre was a bit better also the more modern engines like the H6. Having said that if you change the head gasket for a good metal one they are ok, so if its been done you may be allright. Its not really worth paying a workshop but if you can DIY, i have a couple of mates who buy them with a stuffed gasket for cheap and fix them up.
From what i have seen its rare a 2.5 legacy lasts more than 150,000 without becoming troublesome for an owner with no mechanical skills.
If i had no other choice but to buy a suby id go for the two litre.
