I do like the van but a bit out of my price range. Plus the sedans are just that much sexier lol :P
What do you reckon about the red one i posted a link to! Is that the one you wouldnt touch with a barge pole!

the_don_61, Oct 19, 4:17pm
yeap.bumpers arnt straight, engine bay looks like 300,000Km's plus.Whats under that New Paint.!.Its done the miles and repainted to look good.(looking at the pic's) comen to cover up engine bay rust with painting it black too.

Pic 7 . the brake pedal doesnt look right. it apairs to be a manual one.auto is wider for the foot.

b_unit101, Oct 19, 4:24pm
Wow did you do all that yourself don! Did you enjoy the car while you had it! :)
Come to think of it, youre right, I guess if I got one like the yellow one you linked, the paint is clearly original or at the least years and years old, so you could see any faults that there could be, nothing covered upetc.
Also, itd be a good idea to find one that ( excuse my stereotyping here, hasnt had a young hoon thrash it, and Im only 21 so I amare all young people arent hoons! lol)
And the red one does kind of look like a young person owns it. I car jammed it and the kms are wound back on it

b_unit101, Oct 19, 4:25pm
Im just going to car jam the yellow one :P

bellky, Oct 19, 4:26pm
my pic is a mark 1 1300 gt (sedan)

modie61, Oct 19, 4:34pm
Yea the red one looks like a cover up paint job. The yellow one is more original,i like the yellow colour. Its the classic colour that these were.Do get your uncle or good mechanic/panelbeater to check out what ever you are going to buy. Your on a mission aye !

b_unit101, Oct 19, 4:48pm
Haha yes I know what I want, and usually get it eventually! lol.
WOman on a mission!
I would definately take someone knowledgeable along with me as I wouldnt know exactly what to look for.
I car jammed the yellow one and its kms have been wound back and then back foward again. Hmmmm.
Mind you, Ive owned a car that was wound back.

modie61, Oct 19, 5:01pm
Yip,those mileage entries on carjam are from whatever the wof inspection writes in when doing a wof,so some people get the numbers wrong or have a guess at the mileage when there is only 5 digits on the speedo,if you know what i mean,so if it shows 99000ks on the speedo, sometimes they might guess that its actually done 199000ks and write that down on their sheet. Hope that makes sense. My son and daughter drove around in my 1965 Hillman Superminx for awhile, even though they had way more modern cars, they loved the classic Hillman for transport. Hey good luck, i hope you find what you want, you wont be disappointed old cars are cool.

Nice car was that a 1600 sport

the_don_61, Oct 19, 6:33pm

the_don_61, Oct 19, 6:36pm
LOL No, 1.1 ex rental on the papers.but it had every option from every model when I built it.sport, ghia, GL.sport in the insides, Ghia on the outside.

the_don_61, Oct 19, 6:38pm
Ah my 1st escort.74 model 1300GT

the_don_61, Oct 19, 6:42pm
price peaked for the escort 22 years ago.Jap imports killed them.A blue one like mine sold for around $18K.a year before I sold mine.I treid for 14k for 6 months couldnt get it, sold it to a car yard for 10k they sold it a week later for 14.
car went to dunners.

bellky, Oct 19, 6:44pm
i used to have a 1600 sport, but now days i'd go for the 1300 gt. lovely shape, heaps of chrome, nice dash, and you could put the more powerful 1600 motor in there and i doubt anyone would notice.

much nicer shape than the boxy angular mark 2

the_don_61, Oct 19, 6:51pm
1300GT just about goes better than a 1600 sport.
Find a rare mk1 1600 sport.
1300GT are 4 doors(100 imported by Ford in 74.I belive I had the only white one)Green ones were comen
1600 sport are 2 door even for Mk1's

scoobeey, Oct 19, 7:14pm
Nice car don all the same. My first car was a 76 mk2 kelly green 1300.paid6250.Looked nice with auger mags ,louvres and sounded gd with coby.Loved driving on the bush roads around Tokoroa lol.Handled like glue.

One of the best cars ever built .
Learn about Kettering ignition ( Points ) and buy a manual and if you are half mechanically minded , dont throw it over a bank or roll it over you should could or can have a car that not only can go 4 eva but will increase in value . 20 years ago a mint esky was $1500 max .

A mate of mine had a Mk1 1300 sport, which I think was ex UK. That was a sweet car, everything about it was much nicer than my Mk1, seemed to have a beautifully balanced and free revving motor with stock extractors and dual dd weber, nice trim, GT dash etc.Another mate had a Lotus Mk1.I think this was ex aus, went well, but in many ways I think the 1300 sport was a nicer little car all round, and probably much more reliable/lower cost to maintain.
The Mk 1 always looked nicer to me than Mk 2.
For an inexpensive weekend driver though, unless the OP had a major reason to want something of that age, or didn't want a 2 seater, an NA MX5 ('89-98) would be my choice. If you can find an unmolested one, then they are probably the best value "right" wheel drive "driver's car" around. They usually drive much better with stock wheels (extremely lightweight compared to most "mags") and reasonably standard suspension. A few I've driven have been horrible, with heavy mags with wrong offset, ultra low profile rubber, and bone jarring "upgraded" suspensionperhaps suited if lucky for a track, but not for NZ roads. An auto wouldn't be my choice, but there's probably a good chance of finding a reasonably unmolested and clean auto NA MX5 within the OP's budget. There's a few "issues" with early ones, but good support withMX5 website/forums, as well as clubs around the country.

bellky, Oct 19, 7:34pm
agree about the mx5 - the earlier 1600 is my pick

eagles9999, Oct 19, 7:37pm
And I bet you really drive a Charade,

b_unit101, Oct 19, 7:38pm
Wow lots of positive comments for escorts :)
So Im going to keep an eye out for a tidy one, and as I get the money id get it painted, and get the interior tidied up, plus my partners parents have a chroming business, so could chrome some bits on it quite easily and have it looking cool without taking it too far away from original.

bellky, Oct 19, 8:08pm

Ahhh.
those were the days - when things like that really mattered . After a few Lion Supers at the local trust tavern, conversation could get quite heated.

saki, Oct 19, 11:00pm
Of course it did (tui time)
