yup, they sure did, my uncle had one & it was surprisingly quick (twin carb model etc etc)

the_don_61, Oct 20, 4:14am
I'm old school english all of the way.MX5 I'd have to agree sports car classic to be.
But saying that I'm about to buy a 1st gen MR2 off my mates wife she brought it as a used import 15 years ago.Its had a over heating problem for the past 10 years , but its sweet on short trips.
Its gona be a pig to work on.
a escort would be much better.

Wouldn't surprise me.By the time of the MkII escort sport, it was pretty dated, even if everybody driving one liked to pretend that they were driving an RS1600/2000.

I had a hillman avenger at one time.It was orange with black racing strips and a black bonnet,.it had black inside's with real high bucket front seats. It also had a rev counter in a pod mounted on the dash.I belive it was quite factory for the model it was.oil, volts, fuel, temp, speedo was in the dash.

avenger tiger!.off hand 1770cc with twin carbs.hillman hunter engine.
if you want a classic hillman

1968-69 Hillman Hunter mcLaren. twin cam.only way to go.

LOLMine had RS1600 decals on back guards.
I got them made, cost like $10 each.

b_unit101, Oct 20, 4:22am
i had a quick look at the mx5s on here, they look ok, but I still think I should go for a Ford :)
Hehe theres a lot of 'car speak' going on that I cant understand! lol :P

mm12345, Oct 20, 4:28am
A real one had 170kw at 8,000rpm, yet weighed under 1,000kg.Not bad for an old clunker.

mm12345, Oct 20, 4:32am
Ford's owned a minority share of Mazda for decades. You could always put small blue oval decals under the mazda ones on an MX5.Could be a great conversation starter.

tuttyclan, Oct 20, 5:11am
That one looks ok but be weary of a fresh repaint as it can be hiding rust under bog. Also I see the front seats look like they are ripping at the seams, find out what they cost to fix or replace from a donor car (must be the same colour vinyl though),take that into account in the purchase price.

Having an old / unusual (by todays roads) car is great fun! I bought an old '73 beetle off trademe about 5 months ago, almost every weekend sees me performing lifesaving surgery on its innards, but it is well worth it. I can't go a week without getting at least a couple of postive comments, and often a lot of offers to take it off my hands. Fortunately I have a good grounding in care and feeding of cars, but if I knew nothing about engines I would consider an old car a fantastic way to learn. Good luck and enjoy! Oh, and be prepared to be stranded / let down by the car at some stage or another. Best thing to do is dont take it personally, and consider it a learning experience :) you will be back on the road in no time usually

you will be hard pressed to find an auto 2 door escort.just about every one has been bought up by the rally boys due to the larger transmission tunnel. i sold an absolute POS Mk1 auto shell for stupid money because it had an auto tunnel.

b_unit101, Oct 20, 7:33am
I dont mind if its 2 or 4 door, the 2 ive seen both had 4 doors :)

b_unit101, Oct 20, 7:34am

rob_man, Oct 21, 9:30am
Was wondering the same, the original paperwork is something you don't see too often though.

gunhand, Oct 21, 9:33am
me thinks you be hard pressed to find any escort without abit of filla in it.

gunhand, Oct 21, 10:07am

scoobeey, Oct 21, 10:42am

lovemore_mbigi, Oct 21, 5:30pm
1980 Escort 1600 Sport = magic motor that gave 14 years pleasure from new.On emigrating, the sadness of parting was mixed with the joy of the price I got for this utterly brilliant car.

rob_man, Oct 21, 6:36pm
I'm thinking it might be BH, solve the mystery of the Falcon for whatzizname.

b_ unit101, Bite the bullet, learn to drive a manual gearbox car, you will never regret doing so, I promise.
