What do you all think! Good buy for the asking price or not! What are they like in terms of reliability! Are VW parts relatively well-priced generally!

Thanks in advance!

looks like a good tidy looked after example. Personally myself I would spend a bit more and go for the next model up.

It's 15 years old.nearly.

scotty20001, Oct 26, 4:01am
there is bugger all difference unless you go for a V6 which i wouldn't recommend, the 1.8t is a good engine just make sure the timing belt is done and you should be sweet.

scotty20001, Oct 26, 4:04am
so is most of the rice crap you recommend.

mugenb20b, Oct 26, 4:05am
The engine is good and the body shouldn't rust, but the rest does not have a good rep in my books.

mugenb20b, Oct 26, 4:06am
Which will last another 15 years.

craig04, Oct 26, 4:07am
Is there a name for what's wrong with you! Clinically speaking that is.

mugenb20b, Oct 26, 4:07am
It pays to shop around.

richman123, Oct 26, 5:51am
Hmm ok thanks all I might have to go have a look at this one.

drew2009, Oct 27, 1:27am
Care to elaborate! thats a rather general statement.
Not that i disagree they did have their problems, just think the op could use a bit more than that.

mugenb20b, Oct 27, 1:40am
Yeah, sure. I have personally seen Passats with automatic transmission and air conditioning problems which looked pretty major. Water pump impellers falling off and/or bearings collapsing. And some minor electrical issues. Don't get me wrong, they are a fantastic driving car, and I would happily own a 1.8 turbo version, but no other.

drew2009, Oct 27, 2:14am
Sounds about right, Ive also noticed the electronic immobilisers like to play up and the suspension wears out bits and pieces like most cars their age.
Most of them have had the water pump problems discovered and fixed by now.
Still a good car for the price OP get it checked out first though.

Wonder whats happened to jazz lately! Banned!

ryanm2, Oct 27, 2:18am
we just got our passat for 3.5k. 1998 1.8T wagon. 160km on the clock, major service of water pump / cambelt been done. Just needs new left CV, quoted $250 to replace. 48 hours in to our ownership and all going well so far, although the fuel gauge may be stuck (or im used to the subaru's one dropping so rapidly)

spongefrisk, Oct 27, 3:58am
did you buy this one 417706311 !

ryanm2, Oct 27, 10:41pm
no, another one almost the same. The one we got has the nicer interior and had a towbar. Same colour though.

Does anyone know if Qualitat European's Pre-Purchase inspections are any good! as opposed to an AA or VTNZ inspection!

kingfisher21, Oct 28, 3:50am
No, it's $5000 overpriced.

drew2009, Oct 28, 4:41am
I have not used them myself (Ive never had to pay for a pre purchase inspection as ive got the skills).
However if i was going to pay someone to inspect a car like a passat,
I would definitely get someone like qualitat to do the inspection instead of aa or vtnz as they can offer more specialised advice, they will have plenty of experience with the passats.

drew2009, Oct 28, 4:47am
Also the AA and VTNZ pre purchase inspections have a terrible reputation on here have a search and a read.

best advice from someone who's in the know, stay well clear of these lemons! i fix and inspect cars for a living

thejazzpianoma, Oct 28, 9:45pm
Qualitat would be a great place for an inspection. They have serviced that car in past too. Qualitat is THE place to go for cheap genuine VW parts in NZ too. They import and sell parts as well as do servicing.

That looks like a very nice example. It would need to be as good as described to be worth 5K but if it is really that good thats O.K value wise.

Like Philip said at the beginning if you can spend a little more then the face-lift model is definitely the better car but for 5K given the major service has just been done that's still a lot of car for the money.

In general the Passat is a favorite recommendation of mine for a good safe economical well featured mid sized car. Excellent choice!

Hey Jazz, you seem to know a bit about these kind of vehicles. I am probably going to go have a look at this car on the weekend. Any tips on what to look for from your experience! If I am satisfied with my inspection then I will go get a full inspection from Qualitat next week.
