After 3 years on OE I have returned, here to answer and help with all things Honda related. With a few other Euro and Japanese makes under my belt I can also shed some insight into common problems with alot of other makes now. (Including Holden and Ford. far too many of them in Australia for me. bt it was fun owning an LS2 for a while)

Hi Antwerp. I have just bought a 1979 Honda 900. It is in good nick and I want to know if it is old enough to qualify for classic or vintage / cheaper rego !

Also.anything helpful you know about this model of bike !

roachhead, May 22, 6:31pm
Oh yeah, it is a Honda CB900F.

antwerp87, May 22, 6:40pm
Yea I figured it wasn't a car haha.
It wont qualify for classic yet. From what I understand it needs to be 40 years old! From what I last remember.
But considering you say its in good condition I'd be hanging onto it for as long as I can. Parts wise you will start struggling to find for it but in the long run it will be worth it. But being the first gen of that bike and considering they didn't bring the 2nd gen out for another 25 years afterwards, I'm sure down the track when it does hit the classic range someone who really wants it will be keen to pay some decent $$. But to answer your question: Wait 7 and a half years and it will be classed as a classic from what i remember.

hutchk, May 22, 6:40pm
Nope, cheaper rego kicks in at 40 years.

antwerp87, May 22, 6:48pm
There ya go. :D

roachhead, May 22, 6:48pm
thanks for that guys.so how much WILL rego be for 12 months !

antwerp87, May 22, 7:20pm
It does apply to M/C's. (if rego prices dont change. and most likely being NZ they will) you will be paying 115 per year.

Hey there, I have a del sol that was running a d15b which has basically died after 310000k's, I'm wondering what is involved in a b18c conversion!

Or moreover if it is worth it or rather stick a B16a in instead as I have heard there is a bit of custom frame work in fitting a 18 in there!

Cheers

antwerp87, May 22, 9:51pm
B18C and B16A bolt onto same frame. Go to a wreckers, pick up a B16A and subframe and boltstraight up to the del sol as they came with a b16a in it too. (SiR version) Thats usually the best method. you can put a b18C head on it if you want a bit more out of it. or go to the extreme and put a B20B head on it. They run real good and you can still run the V-Tec cam and rockers in the B20B. Your gonna be spending a bit of cash either way. certification for new engine etc, so ya might as well do it well or not do it at all.
Hope this helps

heywillhay1, May 23, 12:05am
Cheers mate it defiantly helps a lot. Will look around for a b16.

I also have a 81 En1 civic hatch that I'm currently using as a daily driver. Its low Km and smooth and does however it doesn't have any power. is there any carb type replacement stuff or anything that I could do or just not bother and accept the fact that an 1981 1300cc engine is slower than a snail at a green light

antwerp87, May 23, 12:31am
If ya wanna have some real fun with that go and get the engine out of a Honda city turbo and throw that in it. For a 1300 turbo there awesome wee things. And theywill bolt straight in too :D

heywillhay1, May 23, 12:43am
haha It is an option however judging by the notorious handling (eg. understeering around roundabouts) a full rebuilt would probably be in order

matt1710, May 23, 12:43am
hi matt here starter motor in 1993 honda accord has burnt out why would it do this is it common was smokin real bad ah

antwerp87, May 23, 12:44am
Most Likely. but stil great fun. And a cheap conversion

gunhand, May 23, 1:43am
Mate of mine has an rz500 1983 and he only pays a bit over a $100 for rego. Asked him less than a week ago about it. Its only 28 years old.

antwerp87, May 23, 3:11am
yea thats because its only a 500CC. a 900CC is calssed as a full sized motorcycle. Therefore higher cost

gunhand, May 23, 3:22am
Theres only $114 or so between the 600cc and up and under 600cc so it dossnt really explain it.$528601cc and over and $414 for 61cc to 600cc.
So im not sure what or how he got it the way it is but hes not complaining.

antwerp87, May 23, 3:29am
Hes saying. Itsnot a classic YET. but when it is what will the cost be! Which when I remember that was the around about cost to register a bike at full size as a classic

antwerp87, May 23, 6:38pm
Trans plug is on drivers side of the trans case. 14mm. and there should be a filler there just above it too. or through the dip stick.
Usually around 3l to fill. If you really wanna drain it fully after you have drained most of it out start it up to drain the torque converter as it can have 500ml ATF in it.

antwerp87, May 24, 1:57am
Any other questions please feel free to ask. As tomorrow ill be charging for my services :P

roachhead, May 25, 4:21am
Hi again Antwerp87. Now that I have this CB900 I may have a few questions!
I noticed tonight that the tail lights were not on when the headlights were on.
I am unfamiiar with these bikes and wonder is there a switch somewhere that can operate the tail laights independantly to the head lights !

Thanks for your thoughts.
If you are ever in CHCH I would be happy to pay you with some brown liquid !

Mike

antwerp87, May 25, 6:55pm
Hey Roach.
Sorry for my late reply. I'm a little busy today but Ill get onto it tonight and try give you an explaination then (And yea thanks for the offer of brown liquid lol as long as its not the one you have to flush down the toilet. unfortunately I no longer accept that as currency

roachhead, May 26, 4:10am
LOL @ antwerp87. Yeah.our toilet is "allowed" to flush again now so you won't be getting any of that stuff !

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Mike

Ok check the filament in the bulb (there a double filament in them so the brake light may be working even tho the tail light isint. If all is ok with that make sure its the right bulb for it. 3rd: if all is ok check the wiring (being an old bike) make sure the loom is ok and the wiring doesnt have a break in it or isint earthing out where it shouldnt. There isint a switch for the rear lights independently (unless someone for who knows what reason added one in) Hopefully that should give you some info :D
Good luck
