Cheap 'Chinese' tyres - what goes wrong!

They are cheap for a reason, and would I have them on my car the answer is NO.

vtecintegra, Nov 27, 4:17pm
I'm relatively impressed with the cheap Altenzo tyres on my car - seem grippy enough even in the wet and very quiet.

Only done a couple of thousand on them though, who knows how they'll go with a few KMs

richardmayes, Nov 27, 4:23pm
It would be interesting to know how wide that margin is, where you would actually crash with cheap tyres but you wouldn't with better quality ones.!

friendly_prawn, Nov 27, 4:26pm
i have dunlops on my falcon, they let go very easily in the wet. have to be real careful at roundabouts. I'll be replacing them with some very cheap Chinese one shortly. I wouldnt mind betting the chinese one's do a better job.

The word crash reminds me of the police crash investigators they have on TV when they work out the vehicles speed by driving at a certain speed then locking up the brakes and sliding across the road then measure the tire marks, notice how there is no mention of tyre brands etc and the police use budget tires which is why the slide so much even the abs can't cure it when they lockup where as a decent tire wouldn't be anywhere as bad.

friendly_prawn, Nov 27, 5:27pm
lock up! dont modern cars these days all have abs!

hijacka, Nov 27, 5:32pm
So just because a car has abs it will never lockup FP!

friendly_prawn, Nov 27, 5:34pm
yes, thats what I thought. i am happy to stand corrected if thats not the case, but every car i have owned that has anti locking brakes just wont allow the brakes to lock up when stomping hard on the brake pedal. I thought that was the whole purpose of anti lock brakes! Am I wrong!

horsygirl, Nov 27, 5:50pm
People who buy cheap tyres also buy cheap shoes.its all about the rubber meeting the road.

elect70, Nov 27, 6:25pm
Pity there isnt a site that comparesall tyres . Car mags only seem to testtop brands ( probably because they put big ads in their mag )but what about the budget tyres for grannyslittle shopping basketnever see any tests on them .

studio1, Nov 27, 6:46pm
That's my understanding of it. A good ABS system should not allow any wheel to 'lock' for any appreciable period of time, certainly not long enough to lay a patch of rubber on the road. The whole idea of ABS is that braking is most effective when the wheels are turning. A vehicle that is sliding on its tyres isn't desirable.

I'm running Grid 2 or Grid 3 ( can't recall off the top of my head) Bridgestone's on my Corolla wagon, and I really like them. Not too much road noise, nice grip, and really good braking when you stand on the brakes.

Decent tyres compared to budget tyres make a big difference in braking distances in emergency stop situations. My weekend hobby being racing cars made that pretty clear to me in a big hurry (pun intended).

geoff_m, Nov 27, 11:44pm
Consumer mag did a hs ago - a test on tyres a few months ago - a repeat of earlier tests on different sizes. There was (from memory) around 10-15% difference in stopping distance between the best and the worst (Goodride etc). It might make a difference.
The brands and models were ordinary family car tyres - nothing flash.
Anyone got a Consumer sub and can look up the results!

I was unemployed for about a year and too proud to go on the bennie, so was living off my savings. While on that trip I needed tyres and bought cheap - Altenzo. They put them on the front and my steering wheel was at an angle, suggesting an alignment problem. This wasn't there before so I measured and found the tyres were almost a 1/4" different in diameter. I swapped them to the back where it didn't matter so much and solved the problem. While they were on the front I noticed that the wet grip was not good. For the price they are OK, but when I need new tyres again, I'll buy the ones I like best - Toyo Proxes.

Sometimes, circumstances dictate what we need to buy, rather than preference.

You get what you pay for.

zephyrheaven, Nov 28, 2:42am
Got Sunnys on our BMW never look back, took Pirelli 17's off & 18" M5's on - under a hundred bucks a tyre for 235's - have driven it hard wet & dry, ASC / ABS & about 8 airbags will do the rest
Look up tyre comparison online - people are using Sunnys on cars worth more than most of your annual incomes, for the price they cannot be beat & Ive ridden on everything from all of the big names

friendly_prawn, Nov 28, 3:14am

franc123, Nov 28, 3:19am
You fitted four old Datsuns underneath your wheelarches! How on earth did you manage that!

yudasgoat2000, Nov 28, 3:24am
As I understand it, those skid tests you see being done on programmes like SCU are done with the car's ABS turned off.

rainbow.umbrell, Nov 28, 2:59pm
This shows the difference well, although may be a bit biased.
