As a mere vehicle driver I rely on my serviceman to tell me when something needs doing. When I get it serviced it his eyes looking at the brake shoes ( or whatever). I expect him to tell me that the shoes are worn and will need replacement shortly. If my vehicle breaks down due to wear on something I will be bending the ear of my serviceman. Its even worse if the driver happens to be an 85 yr old granny who knows absolutely nothing about cars. They assume that the serviceman will service the vehicle and advise them appropiately.

unless you spend 10000$ stripping the car down to check you wont pick up on everything thats worn and will need replacing in the next 6 months. unless your car is new every part is worn to some extent . rather than replace everything it is best to wait and see what has problems then fix them then. it sounds like the brakes just wore out and the wear plate was noisy when you stopped. the other brakes should still of worked for you to stop. i think the garage you go to is good they dont do unnessesary work you still had brakes working no big deal with the scratching they usually smooth them anyway. thats how were they were designed to work and let you know they need replacing thats why the tags are there or else if suspected they could of pulled the wheels off last service
