Fitted new trans , starter not engaging

could be the starter isnt throwing out, remove it and do a floor test to see its throwing the gear out .

petermcg, Jan 30, 6:49am
Did you change the flexplate or have it off.

yogibearz, Jan 30, 8:51am
youve just answered it.if the flexplate was changed that is probably the fault,is the ring gear on each flex plate in the same position,or have you fitted it back to front!

gtxonp, Jan 30, 9:03am
so whats that trans out again ! gutted

neville48, Jan 30, 9:10am
are the two motors the same type/year etc, you probably have to use the 1st starter and the 1st flex plate to get a match. you may be using the 1st starter and 2nd flex plate and the flex plate is smaller.
,or a manual starter instead of auto starter.the list goes on and out it comes aye.

bigfatmat1, Jan 30, 9:45am
or maybe the clutch in the starter has failed.

yogibearz, Jan 31, 1:14am
yes its a trans out job if thats the problem, have a good look through the starter motor hole in the bell housingfirst.it may confirm the problem.

bigfatmat1, Jan 31, 11:25pm
the torque converter should be bolted to the flexi plate. have you loaded up the starter on the bench to see if its clutch is slipping or felt it to see if it slips!

mrfxit, Jan 31, 11:33pm
Yep good call
Have to agree with the "not skinny floor rug" about testing the clutch on the starter.
Mmmm does it sound like it's grinding on the ring gear or just spinning!

Could be a solinoid contact/ power to starter (it's self) issuse presuming the starter is the correct unit.

bigfatmat1, Jan 31, 11:43pm
Thats 'large not skinny floor rug'

mrfxit, Feb 1, 12:10am
LOL, Sorry, missed that bit ;-)

skin1235, Feb 1, 3:18am
just outside the square for a moment!, did you actually bolt the torque converter to the flexiplate ( you say you cannot see any teeth through the hole and wonder if the t/c has not slid far enough in)

skin1235, Feb 1, 3:27am
yes you can bolt them together with the trans in, is there another way to fit them, properly,
from underneath turn the engine by hand until one of the wings of the flexiplate is pointing down - or if a full disk flexiplate, one of the bolt holes is at the bottom, turn the t/c until the bolt holes line up, fit the bolt, repeat for as many bolts as needed 3 or 4 normally

but

the t/c should not be more than about 5-8mm back from the plate, in most cases it would have damaged the oil pump to be more than 5-8mm from the plate due to not having been aligned into the spigot properly before the bell housing bolts were tightened

how about the torque converter isnt locked into place and then installed with flex plate bolted up.mmmm you will not see the teeth then either.mmmmmm
