Fiat

"introducing all sorts of innovations to passenger cars that the Japanese took, oh, 20 years to catch up to"

4 wheel discs, DOHC, 5 speed, standard tacho, 110mph. 1968 Fiat 125 Sedan

sw20, Feb 3, 6:35am
Alfa Romeo beat that by five years.

4 wheel disc, DOHC, 5 speed, tacho, 117mph 1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia.

bendean, Feb 3, 6:40am

woody1946, Feb 3, 7:00am
Jaguar beat the whole lot

4 wheel disc brakes,4 speed with over drive, tacho DOHC, 125mph, 3.8 litre Mk 2 1960

Isuzu had DOHC in 1968, Mitsubishi and Toyota had DOHC in 1970 and I'm sure the 117, Galant GTO MR and Celica had factory tachos and 110mph+ top speeds. Perhaps no 4wheel discs though.

Commonplace things in most of today's automobiles such as 5 speed Automatic transmission, electronic suspension control, electrochromatic rear view mirror, mass produced 5V per cylinder engine, electronic ABS, rain sensing windscreen wipers, factory GPS system, steering wheel mounted audio controls, direct injection gasoline engine, electronic cam-switching, electronic VVT, diesel engine with VVT came from, you guessed it, Japan.

fordcrzy, Feb 3, 8:19am
wasnt abs made for trucks first!

phillip.weston, Feb 3, 8:20am
and planes, but it was adapted for automotive use, with Nissan being the first to have an electronically controlled ABS in 1971.

morrisman1, Feb 3, 8:26am
Rolls Royce had 4 wheel discs back near the start of the 20th century

biddy6, Feb 3, 8:38am
The message thats not getting thru is that Fiat hadthe 4 wheel dics 5 speed box- twin cam motors etc in their everyday cars back in mid 60s at working class prices

bendean, Feb 3, 8:51am
still ugly cars

chris_051, Feb 3, 8:59am
Too bad they aren't innovators and have to copy the rest of the automotive world, btw out of interest after recently looking at new car prices, bland Corolla 4spd auto wagon rrp very close to VW Golf TDi DSG 6 spd!

bendean, Feb 3, 9:28am
the japanese innovated a whole heap of stuff expecially in the motorsport world wow maybe not in 1960 but were u even alive then look at the rb's and 4g63 engines 20 years old but still up thea producing 1000hp if you got the coin and although i dont like them vtec engines, to me thats wot matters but personal preference mate
