cant get the darned thing to engage, bugger of a thing (350 Chev), put shim in and it just spins freely, take shim out and it sounds like it it is hitting flywheel, arrrghggghhh

sounds like that solenoid cap was assembled wrong.

New starter/reco'd! From that vehicle originally! Sounds like you need the shim removed, but the teeth are not meshing. Correct Gear on starter!

exactly the same starter as was in it, best i wait till the reduction starter turns up

Does the starter throw its gear out properly on a test bench! and have you stress tested it on the bench! ( with a piece of wood ) its noo good if the return spring is too tight to throw the gear out properly
