Oil for 350 Chev SB

What oil would you recommend for an old school 350 Chev! haven't had to top it up since I brought it several months back but have a longer trip planned and want to ensure everything is in order.

wouldn't be too fussed about an expensive synthetic or anything, just get it hot, drain it and change filter before topping up with decent new clean stuff.

my holden book for 2002 5.7 liter (350) says10w/30 or 20w/50 or 15w/40. Just about covers the field. Sticker on window don't give grade, sorry. My pick would be 15W/40 with summer here.

Cheers for that, I was thinking 10w/30 as I think the american forums say 5W is factory recommended but their climate is alot colder and as you say summer is here. well hopefully

DON'T use that grade in a old cast iron 350, you will slowly destroy it, use Castrol Edge 25W-50

Agreed good oil that.

How come all you guys go by is the ambient air temperture viscosity of a oil! Does the actual spec of a oil not come into it! And some of you are posting that this oil is good or that oil is great, how do you actually know this unless you do oil sampling and i doubt if any of you have ever done oil sampling on any oils.

Buy the cheapest thickest pigshit you can find. All good!

sometimes Supercheap has 4L of Castrol GTX 20W-50 for only $20. Sould be suitable for an old cast iron 350. If you want to spash out, Penrite HPR30 20W-60 is what I use in my Rover V8. Don't need anything fancy in these old 60s technology motors.

Find a oil with plenty of Zinc content for flat tappet engines Pennzoil racing oil 20/50 .Modern oils lack zinc content and you will kill the cam. Some imported American brands have enough zinc roughly need 1200ppm or more.

I use Pennzoil 20/50 in my 350 sbc.

A good product.Avoid synthetics at all cost.

Totally agree, I have seen plenty of camshaft wear on older v8's before, you can buy a zinc additive to put in your oil,but pennzoil would be my pick too

I use Castrol GTX 20/50 with Zddp additive aswell.

kingfisher21, Dec 22, 9:08am
That why I recommended Edge, it is designed for old school and has the zinc content required.
