can anyone give an indication of costs to service an auto transmission on the above. what sort of oil do they take! its going fine no problems.

I take it its a 6 speed! It costs about $1000 to service it, do you know if it has the the steel or the plastic pan! To my knowledge they take a ZF synthetic oil, takes about 8 litres of oil. Ford say it has a service interval of 90,000kms but personally I wouldn't push it that far.

A lot of late model vehicles have these service intervals, commodore are pushing out to 120,000km, amazingly a lot of new vehicles are now recommending to NEVER change the transmission oil! Most new automatic toyotas are this way, even back to 2001. Scary. Anyone that tows should definately ignore that recommendation

And $6000 to $7000 to fix.
They have a fault which shows up at about 200000 kms

BMW have been doing that with the ZF4 spd and 5 spds that came out in the E34, late 1980s, 'sealed for life' which is probably why there were dozens of 525i and 535is for sale when they were popular with buggered gearboxes

Theres no harm in doing it early, my BF has done 40,000kms and plan on servicing it around the 50-60,000km mark. "Sealed for life"yeah right.

FORD recomend doing your transmision services at 50000kms!so you are on the mark there.

Just going through my service book, and it does say 90,000km for the 6 speed, might have changed now but at least Ford has specified a service interval, back when it first got released in the Falcon they didn't even have one.
