Loss of top gear

my hyundi sonata ( lots of miles) occasionally loses top gear. If i stop and put it in park it goes into top the next time. Any simple suggestions welcome.

That sounds bad. I'd take it to a automatic transmission specialist for an assessment. The only simple thing a backyard mechanic / handyman can do is change the transmission fluid but I doubt that would help. At the very least it'll need an adjustment to the bands / clutches by a specialist, maybe an overhaul.

not necessarily, it could be a simple problem in the valve body in the Transmission, the last valve may be dropping pressure for some reason and only comes right when there is pressure pumped in a different direction, but, I will say a good trans flush may be in order, if the problem then exists afterward, then its time for a deeper look into the problem

Some autos wont change into top until the engine reaches a certain temp. Could it be an electrical fault with this feature! Im not exactly sure how that works so, just a suggestion.

Yeah it will be forth gear you are talking about Lucky. It is a simple job, can be done in place, and only takes about an hour to doif it is the problem. which is highly likely.

Best to get it diagnosed by someone before starting to replace parts though. The disgnosis takes about an hour to an hour and a half to do but a lot of places don't want to do the diagnosis because they aren't competent/confident enough to commit them selves to a quote. Shop around and insist that you want a diagnosis done. if they try and bluff or don't want to do the diagnosis. move on till you find someone that can and will do the diagnosis for you. otherwise you are just opening your cheque book up for them and inviting them to help themselves with no undertaking to fix the problem.
