We have a 91 535i,it had been running ok,went to drive it the next day, "trans programme-refer handbook" came up on dash. Can someone please enlighten us as to what this means. Thankyou in advance.

It means you need to read your handbook. It will have the instructions on what to to next, will will brobably be take it to the dealer"

The transmission is pretty much the death of all E34's.

Probably only suitable as a boat anchor now.

Thankyou. we dont have the handbook but we did think it seems fatal : (

Mine did that once, I stopped the car, turned off, freaked out for a while and then started it up again. It was fine, and has never done it since. This was about 5 or 6 years ago.

When the warning comes up it means the transmission has gone into limp home mode whereby only the two highest ! gears are selected. The fault may well be electronic rather than mechanical, which might be less of an expensive headache to remedy perhaps.

Good luck!

check your oil

One of mine threw that warning too and there was nothing wrong with it, probably just a poor connection somewhere.

I'd advise you get you trans fluid checked, or YouTube how to if you don't have a hand book.

Thanks people, the oil has been checked and is fine, hopefully its not as serious as we first thought. Happy New Year everyone : )

I've had this error on my old E36, was just after I had got the tranny serviced, same thing happened on my GOLF VR6, the next day, no error, both cars never played up again.
