the battery is overcharging. can this cause alot of electrical problems and fuses to blow! any info on this would be much appreciated

Yes I think this is the cause. Take it to an auto electrical technician and get the alternator checked out.

thankyou just seems to be falling to bloody pieces, took it to mechanics to get timing belt done and had problems ever since, could they have bumped or done something for all these causes!

Unlikely, but remeber it is 16 years old, so issues from time to time have to be expected.

When the mechanic took apart the engine to do the timing belt, he would have moved the alternator.When all the new parts went together, its put stress on older parts like the alternator and its shorted.Not the mechanics fault, its just the way it happens some times.
