Take a late model Legacy for a spin, I think you will come to like their chassis dynamics over the Atenza or Accord wagons - the Subaru just seems to have that pizazz or flair the other two are missing. If you're concerned with fuel economy, then you wouldn't really want something 4WD.

The newer shape Subarus aren't nearly as bad as the older ones on fuel anyway.

Given you want 4WD I think it might be wise to get over the Bretheren having one and thinking seriously about the Passat or the Audi A6 (same mechanics different slightly larger party dress.
You could have a real cracker for that money and that series of Audi/VW's are real crackers especially in 4WD form. The 4motion/Quattro drivetrain is really hard to beat.
Jump in one and take it for a drive, as a car it should speak for itself and with the reliability, serviceability and competitive parts they are really hard to beat.
