Bugger it, I rang them (very nice & helpfull lady) 25,000kms to top up to zero will be $1117.53 Based on 1: Single axle / 2T ticket (Mitsi L300) 2: $44.31 per 1000kms 3: admin fee of $9.78
They will need a minimum of another 1000kms on that to be able to drive the vehicle = a total of $1161.84

getting cheaper to go back to petrol and stuff the carbon foot print
RUC have nothing to do with your registration fees.
Road User Charges are just a replacement for the Petrol Tax that you are not paying as part of the pump price of the Diesel when you buy it.
(It is done this way because virtually all petrol goes into road vehicles, whereas a lot of diesel is used in farm machinery, ships etc that do not go on the public roads, so it is unfair to make them pay towards the upkeep of the roads.)

right i get that but the reg fees on a diesel are twice that for a car$600 as apposed to $300 and when you add ruc into the mix it is getting cheaper to run a petrolvan

Acc is included in the price of petrol and not diesel. A van is higher risk on the road than a passenger car. Yes it is probably cheaper to own a petrol if you do low ks.

it's also a bit of a "hangover" from the old days where ONLY commercial vehicles (trucks etc) were diesel, hence very heavy & caused more damage to the roads etc more so then petrol vehicles (cars/ motorbikes etc)
At that stage, it was rare to see or be able to buy a diesel car.

Well thats a Tui add, at the last Road Transport Forum meeting it was revealed that something in the order of 69% of RUC actually goes into the welfare system.

the ruc system is under review now. everyone will be paying for the maximum the vehicle is rated at, a 4x4 will have to pay for a 4-5t so get ready for a increase. one of the propositions is to increase the fine for a obscured ruc license label to $15,000! yes fifteen thousand dollars. they live in fantasy land! cant wait until the first $15000 fine is issued to a people mover full of Maoris in south auckland. at least the officer will get a good send off at his funeral a few days later.

Not entirely true. Yes failure to display will be an infringement rather than a court appearance if all the current plans go ahead but it won't be $15,000. It will be interesting to see if, and if so, how much RUC will increase in price for small vehicle users. I've already changed to a petrol ute and find it cheaper to run for the kms I do.
