I find that fluids find the natural level and if there isn't a hole at the lowest point that they won't empty completely from the containment vessel.

oil is cheap. i tend to "flood the sump" with a couple of litres of new oil, before putting the sump plug back in. effectively washing the sump out.

I make a point of jacking up opposite to the sump plug so that the plug is at the lowest point. On my ford falcon that required me jacking the rear drivers side of the car a couple of weeks ago. My mate came round half way through asking what I was doing, I said an oil change. and he couldnt figure out why I had the rear jacked up for a oil change haha.
