Check the gaskets at the top of petrol tank where fuel guage fitting is.

Ha. Mk3 fizzer. Had a few of them in my time. Can't help with the fuel leak but. shouldn't be too hard to find. Hmmm, its not a leak in the top of the tank letting fumes into the boot is it.!

check gas lines, from the front end of car to the back to the petrol tank. Good luck

With a mechanical fuel pump the fuel line is under a small vacuum (i.e. being ???sucked through??? as opposed to being under pressure) and probably not the culprit you are looking for.I??

Rust on the top of the tank, can be hard to spot.

air is being dragged in throug boot/tail light caused by the air being sucked out through the window you have a low pressure in the cabin.try openg the vents to repressureize the cabin
