CV Joints - '96 Camry

bluecambridge, May 10, 1:34am
Hi all, just after some advice, I need to do the CV joints on my '96 Camry (4cyl auto) question is, is this a job that someone with a bit of basic mechanical know-how can do themselves! Or are they a bitch to get out, maybe needing specialised tools! Just trying to save a bit of money, don't mind spending a bit of time. I believe there is an inner and an outer joint! I guess it would be the outer joint that needs replacing! (knocking when cornering at low speeds)
many thanks.

inner joints pop out if requiredease enough you need a tuff braker bar and a big mother socket to undo the main center nut rest is just normal rachet tool set and a big hammer to smack the joint off the shaft. you need a bit knowlage. probably best to remove the shaft from the inner joint and do it on a table with a vice to hold the shaft when you smack the joint offand back on to not damage the clip on reassembly and dont forget to put the new rubber on the shaft befor you smack the new joint on.
Supercheap auto or from here whole thing be 65$

you just undo the clip on the innerjoint and check if there is a ring in the grove to stop the joint coming out, dont pop em out of the gearbox as that creates more work and trans fluid spills. you pack em all up with grease again on reassembly.

thanks intrade, not sure if I'm up to the task or not! How much might I expect to pay a workshop per side, do you know!
