Help with a Nissan Pulsar problem

Hey there, just looking for suggestions before having to shell out for a mechanic.

I have a 1997 Nissan Pulsar.Yesterday it started doing this odd 'coughing' type thing where the power would just drop out for a second or two when you pressed the accelerator.Today it's gotten to the point where it does it all the time, even when just revving it in neutral. No power getting through to the point where it sometimes stalls when you do it.It's like the engine's being starved of power or something.

I've checked the oil, water, transmission fluid, air filter.Tried revving it up initially in case it was a fuel block, no luck. It's now basically undriveable without bunny hopping along.

Thoughts!Thanks.
