If you can buy a BMW then you can afford insurance and to keep its services up, Just like any other car, if you take care of it, it will take care of you ( not including toyota cavaliers)

Genuine BMW parts can be expensive, but so can parts for Japanese cars.

BMW's are great!Well, they can be.Or they can be a pain.Choose carefully.I have owned 3 of them, done over a million k's and never broken down.Ever.

bmw's 98+ are great all round
Bmw part prices are very good nowadays so that saying is slowly fading in the wind

Many of the same rules apply if you are wanting to buy a decent used car and spent a reasonable amount of coin. Buy NZ new, with full service history (preferably dealer history). That way at the very least you know it has had basic servicing done on schedule (as opposed to an Otara special - you know the type, a 318i with an M3 badge running on 20's with a Notorious B.I.G sticker on the back window). An unmodified example helps increase the chances of it being a genuine, looked-after example (i.e. no aftermarket larger size alloys or drainpipe exhaust - that says boy-racer wannabe, who can't afford to put fuel in it, let alone look after it and service it). And of course the mileage will make an impact - the lower the better, but overall, general servicing costs shouldn't be much more than an equivalent Jap. If something catastrophic occurs, say major gearbox work, then that might bite you, but then it probably would regardless of make. I'd have no hesitation owning a well looked after Beemer myself. Almost brought a beautiful NZ new E36 M3 sedan last year - went with an E55 AMG instead. From time to time I regret it not getting it!

something unmolested like this:

is a classy car and if you look after it it will look after you.
when you buy one just leave a grand or so and get it FULLY serviced by a bmw specialist gearbox oil. brake fluid.the lot.

Small 6 cyl, straight 6, economical, rear wheel drive, not jap, nice looking, different to your neighbours car, and reasonably priced what more could you possibly ask for in a car.

It's a shame that the "BMW's are expensive to have" saying is still hanging around.I've had a few now, and never had any major (or expensive) issues. There's always some things that will be wearing out on any car, so the bulk population of Euro's in NZ are older and starting to "fail". I've still got my e34 that I was supposed to sell when I bought the e39 as I really don't want to part with it (served me too well).

There s a true saying, if you can't afford a new German car then you certainly can't afford a second hand one.Very overated and now everyones got one.

boat3, Apr 28, 9:47am
buy my one,a good car.

foxdonut, Apr 28, 9:50am
Fksakes.

Last time i looked, there was more than one type of "BMW". Are we talking riced out heap of shit 318 E36! Or concourse '39 BMW 328 Roadster! How much money are we spending! 1,500 or 150,000.00! What is it going to do! drive six people to work and school or sit in the garage until the local club racing season starts!

I think used 3 series' are a heap of shit and a huge waste of money but I'd definitely consider an old CSL as a resto project or drive a Z4 Coupe if I won the lotto.

Whats the context!

I have 2 BMWs they are not expensive to maintain . Good solid cars & very good on fuel. Treat yourself go and buy one. There are a lot of BMW parts being sold on Trademe at great prices.

foxdonut, Apr 29, 3:47am
Its cool.

I got it.

foxdonut, Apr 29, 3:47am
But I still maintain that old 3 series are shit.

richard198, Apr 29, 4:04am
I'd like a '39 328. Know where I can get one!

shuddupowh, Apr 29, 4:18am
Buy an E30. They're F--king awesome BMWs. If you get a BMW thats been thrashed just like all other makes, you are in for trouble. Like all cars, check for history, milage (only really matters if no history), etc. BMW parts are not expensive, compared to Jappas, only if you buy genuine. Alot of retailers sell cheaper versions which are no worst than original.

dvince, Apr 29, 4:59am
LOL quote from the 'Dog and lemon guide' >.<

foxdonut, Apr 29, 5:03am
I do actually. $650US and change. Full resto and a tuned 326 engine so not exactly concourse but it's up to Pebble Beach Standard . You interested!

richard198, Apr 29, 6:57am
I think it was Stella Artois. They were relieved it was only the car was damaged and not the beer!

richard198, Apr 29, 6:59am
You may have quoted wrong post. Are we talking about a Frazer Nash roadster!

richard198, Apr 29, 7:01am

foxdonut, Apr 29, 7:01am
No - a 1939 BMW 328 Roadster. There's one for sale in Italy at the moment I found. - one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_328

Looks like I did quote the wrong post.

And I didn't realise they were sold as Fraser Nash.

really!

richard198, Apr 29, 7:36am
Yeah, '37 or'39 would be good.
$650 US!
